Objectives

We aimed to achieve a stronger awareness of how narratives shape perceptions of gender identity, equality, and diversity, particularly among youth workers, community workers, storytellers, and young people themselves. By implementing the project, we wanted to challenge dominant and outdated narratives—often rooted in the white, heterosexual male norm—and support the development of alternative, more inclusive stories that reflect the diversity of contemporary society. A key objective was to equip professionals working with youth with practical tools and methods based on storytelling. We sought to enable them to address gender-related issues in a meaningful and accessible way, helping young people critically reflect on the stories they have grown up with and, where needed, replace them with narratives they can better identify with. In doing so, we aimed to support young people in expressing themselves and constructing their own identities. Ultimately, we wanted to contribute to greater social inclusion, promote shared values of gender equality and diversity, and strengthen young people’s active participation in society.

Background

We applied for this project because it addressed urgent challenges around gender identity, diversity, and equality in today’s European context. Across EU countries, debates on gender had intensified, yet they were often shaped by restrictive norms, especially the dominant white, heterosexual male perspective. We aimed to contribute to challenging these norms and promoting more inclusive understandings of identity. The project responded to key needs. First, there was a need to question traditional narratives, often rooted in the 18th and 19th centuries, that still influence perceptions of gender today and are reinforced through modern media. Second, young people needed alternative, inclusive narratives and safe spaces to explore and express their identities. Storytelling offered an effective way to engage with these complex topics and support identity development. Finally, the project addressed the need to promote shared values of gender equality and diversity. By encouraging young people to critically reflect on existing narratives and create new ones, it supported their social engagement and participation in a more inclusive society.
