Model European Parliament - Baltic Sea Region (MEPBSR) is a yearly recurring conference of youth simulating a session at the European Parliament. Each session lasts a week and includes both a formal schedule of meetings and informal social events. The participating countries each take their turn hosting the conferences, and this year, MEP Norway had this responsibility. The MEPBSR at Utøya has brought our youth together to learn about the democratic process, to familiarize them with different political fields of study and to get to make connections with other youths across national borders. The MEP session has offered an inside experience of a democratic process, and demonstrate to our participants how political decisions in the EU are made. They have thus, gained both factual knowledge on how the EU works and knowledge of the political challenges Europe faces. Participating in this practical process has benefited our youth both academically and personally. The overarching goal of the MEP project is to engage students across Europe in European politics on a practical, intellectual and emotional level by encouraging engagement and discussion of issues relevant to them and society around them. In the process, we have promoted democratic values, such as tolerance, liberty of expression, pluralism and a sense of European identity across borders. By drafting resolutions, proposing solutions to given problems and debating these, they develop practical and social skills that better enable them to engage in European politics and help shape our common future. All of our achievements conform with the stated targets in the EU Youth Dialogue and Art. 165 EU Treaty on Youth participation.
