Objectives

Our project (SkillBoosters DiscoveringEU) was designed to give young people with fewer opportunities from the rural area of Gheorgheni (Harghita County, Romania) the chance to explore Europe through learning-by-discovery experiences. We wanted to address acute challenges for Romanian youth, particularly in Harghita county. Romania has the EU's highest child poverty risk (41.5% according to Eurostat). Harghita county, with the smallest average salary, likely faces an over 50% poverty and social exclusion risk for youngsters. Compounding this, around 40% of local youth fail the Baccalaureate (often due to language/ethnic barriers), leading to limited career options or emigration. Given the low uptake in KA155 activities and the finding that youth from the Gheorgheni zone underutilize EU initiatives like DiscoverEU, this project represents a crucial opportunity to offer new perspectives and combat social exclusion for 18-year-olds from these rural areas. We strongly believed that by implementing this project we will increase the youth participation in our area, and provide opportunities to youngsters who haven't ever participated to Erasmus+ mobility projects yet, and some of them haven't ever had the opportunity to cross the borders of the country yet. All of these youngsters had the opportunity to feel the sense of belonging to the European Union and to a safe community, which helped them implementing their plans. The main goal was to enable these young people (facing economic, social, geographical / linguistic barriers) to participate in a European mobility project (the first in their life) that support their personal development, strengthens their sense of belonging to the European Union. Moreover, as the project's name suggest, our goal was also to boost the skills of the participants by creating groups where they have common interests and topics which motivate them, thus during the journey they also had the opoortunity to learn about these topics in an interactive way. (i.e.: literature, agriculture, history or photography where some of these topics). OBJECTIVES PROMOTE INCLUSION AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES by offering the DiscoverEU experience to young people who otherwise would not have the resources, confidence or information to apply independently. Before the implementation of the project we have not found anyone from Gheorgheni zone who has participated to a DiscoverEU project before. Now we have 40 youngsters (and the accompanying persons). Develop KEY LIFE SKILLS such as self-confidence, teamwork, communication in foreign languages (by preparing them even before the start of their mobility action), intercultural awareness and confidence to present their journey and experiences in front of others. Provide PRACTICAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES connected to the participants’ interests (e.g., sustainable agriculture, green living, and digital competence) and introduce them to sustainable European practices. Encourage PERSONAL GROWTH and AUTONOMY by involving participants in all stages: from planning and organizing their trip to reflecting on their experiences afterward. PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY and contribute to the green, digital, and participatory priorities of the Erasmus+ Programme by integrating environmental awareness, digital planning tools, and participatory learning methods. Strengthen the capacity of our organization to work with young people with fewer opportunities and to build a long-term network for inclusive youth mobility in the Transylvanian region. The project responded directly to the local context in Harghita County, where many young people from ethnic minorities and rural backgrounds face limited educational and professional opportunities. By giving them the opportunity to travel, learn, and discover Europe, we sought to empower them to become more active, informed, and confident citizens and to see themselves as part of a wider European community.
