The main objective of the project was to support the implementation of the European Green Deal by developing green skills and promoting sustainable building solutions, with a specific focus on cool roofs as a means to mitigate the urban heat island effect. We wanted to increase the availability of high-quality and inclusive learning opportunities for adults, especially those with fewer opportunities, migrants, NEETs and low-skilled workers. By creating clear training pathways and accessible tools, the project aimed to strengthen employability, inclusivity, and participation in green jobs. Three specific objectives were defined: (1) to collect and share best practices on sustainable construction through a stakeholder workshop and the publication of the Cool Roofs and Green Practices Report; (2) to identify skills gaps in the roofing sector and create an interactive Digital Skills Map as a tool for VET providers, employers and job seekers; and (3) to design Sustainable Roofing Curricula consisting of four training programmes that combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills for adult learners. Together these objectives contributed to professional development, industry innovation, and climate resilience.
We applied for this project to respond to urgent challenges related to climate change, rapid urbanisation and the growing need for sustainable construction practices. Urban areas are particularly affected by the urban heat island effect, which increases energy consumption, worsens living conditions, and contributes to climate vulnerability. Cool roofing was identified as a practical and cost-effective solution to mitigate these effects while supporting EU climate priorities. At the same time, there was a clear need to strengthen adult education pathways in the construction sector, especially for disadvantaged groups, migrants, NEETs and low-skilled workers, who face barriers to labour market participation. Both partners identified gaps in existing training opportunities and a lack of tools to connect industry needs with education. The project therefore addressed the need for inclusive and accessible learning opportunities, the upskilling of the workforce with green competences, and the creation of structured curricula to support professional development. By combining Swedish and Italian expertise, we aimed to create transferable results that respond to local and European needs for sustainable development and climate resilience.
