Objectives

The digital world is rapidly transforming every aspect of economic and social life, creating new types of jobs that differ from the traditional. As a result, it is crucial for young people to anticipate and prepare for the future of work in order to remain relevant and valuable. According to the Digital Skills and Jobs in Türkiye report published by the European Commission in 2021, Turkey has a relatively low level of digital skills compared to other European countries. Only 43% of the adult population in Türkiye has basic digital skills, while 20% of the population has no digital skills at all. The situation is slightly better among young people (aged 16-29), with 55% reporting basic or above basic digital skills. However, this is still below the EU average of 69%. The report also highlights some of the specific challenges Türkiye faces in terms of developing digital skills. For example, there is a significant gender gap in digital skills, with men more likely to report having digital skills than women. There are also inequalities between urban and rural areas, with urban areas generally having higher digital skills. Finally, the report highlights a lack of coordination between stakeholders and initiatives to develop digital skills in Türkiye, which could hinder progress. In addition, the demand for highly skilled personnel who can effectively use technology has become a necessity for the success of companies and sectors. In this context, our project aims to strengthen the digital competences of young people in Turkey, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Italy, Greece and Romania. According to Eurostat statistics on the share of young people aged 16-29 reporting basic or above general digital skills in 2021, the shares of our partner countries are as follows: Turkey with 30%, Bulgaria with 31%, North Macedonia with 38%, Italy with 46%, Greece with 58% and Romania with 60%. For general digital skills above basic, Turkey has 10%, Bulgaria with 8%, North Macedonia with 16%, Italy with 23%, Greece with 36% and Romania with 45%. Furthermore, encouraging young people to use digital capacities to protect the environment is crucial for the future of our planet. Digital tools can help raise awareness and support environmental campaigns, as well as empower young people to engage in sustainable behavior and make informed decisions about their impact on the environment. Using digital technologies, young people can easily access information about environmental issues, learn about sustainable practices, and connect with like-minded people to collaborate on environmental projects. In addition, digital tools help monitor the impact of human activities on the environment, allowing for more effective environmental management and protection. Overall, integrating digital capabilities into environmental protection efforts can help young people become more environmentally conscious and take action for a more sustainable future. The European Commission emphasized that more than 90% of jobs already require at least basic digital skills, and that digital skills refer to five areas: information and data literacy skills, communication and collaboration skills, digital content creation skills, security skills, and problem-solving skills. However, research shows that despite 95% of young people accessing the internet every day, they do not have the skills to use digital technologies safely and effectively. Therefore, our project aimed to achieve the following specific objectives: -To provide information to young people about basic and advanced digital skills. -To increase their awareness of how they can improve their digital skills. -To ensure that young people understand what digital tools are needed in the workforce. -To encourage young people to use digital skills to protect our environment. Through this project, we aim to strengthen young people’s digital skills to keep up with the new digital age and contribute to the sustainable development goal of promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work.
