Objectives

The idea for the project emerged as a result of the Düzce earthquake on November 23, 2022, and the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes that occurred nine hours apart on February 6, 2023. Natural disasters are among the greatest threats to humanity. In many parts of the world, natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and fires cause devastating consequences. These disasters lead to loss of life, injuries, homelessness, economic damage, environmental pollution, and even long-term psychological effects. In particular, European countries are at high risk of exposure to natural disasters. Partner countries such as Italy, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Austria, Greece, and Turkey are also among those at risk. The damages caused by natural disasters in these countries can reach hundreds of millions of euros and severely impact national economies. In addition to the heavy losses caused by natural disasters, research shows another concerning outcome: compared to 40 years ago, the likelihood of communities being displaced due to such events has increased by over 60%. According to data from UNFPA, for more than the last 20 years, an average of 340 disasters occur annually, affecting approximately 200 million people and resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands. In the two earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş in February 2023, tens of thousands of people lost their lives, hundreds of thousands were left homeless, and many were forced to migrate. Although it is not possible to prevent these inevitable natural events, it is within our power to minimize the damage they cause by taking precautions and raising awareness. Unfortunately, our lack of awareness plays a major role in the scale of these losses. For this reason, it is vital for these countries to raise awareness among young people about natural disasters, to develop disaster policies, and to generate solution proposals that can assist in the post-disaster recovery process. The Erasmus+ youth exchange project provided an opportunity to increase young people's knowledge on the subject and to identify the weak points in the disaster policies of partner countries. Within the scope of the project, young people came together to share knowledge and experiences from different countries. In doing so, awareness was raised about improving the disaster policies of the partner countries. Additionally, the youth identified solution proposals to reduce the destructive effects of natural disasters and developed new ideas on what can be done in the recovery phase following a disaster. Another important goal of the project was to ensure that young people are prepared for disasters. Being prepared for disasters is important in minimizing both human and economic losses. For this reason, the youth worked on disaster preparedness and contributed to the recovery process after disasters, which helped participants become more resilient to future natural disasters. Our project served as an opportunity to raise awareness among young people about natural disasters, to improve disaster policies, and to generate solutions that can assist in the recovery process. By strengthening cooperation among young people in the partner countries, the project helped these countries become better prepared for disasters and work toward a more resilient future. The overall objective of our project was to increase the competencies of young people in combating natural disasters. Our specific objectives were as follows: -To raise disaster awareness by informing young people and local communities about the causes and consequences of natural disasters. -To inform young people about the disaster policies of the partner countries and identify the shortcomings of these policies. -To produce solutions aimed at preventing natural disasters or minimizing their damage. -To find solution proposals that facilitate the social integration of people affected by natural disasters.
