Eğirdir Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in Turkey. In addition to being a natural drinking water basin, it is an internationally important wetland in terms of biodiversity values. While there are 514 different bird species in Europe and 454 different bird species in Turkey, 225 of the bird species found in Turkey live in Eğirdir Lake and its surroundings. In addition to the species it hosts, Eğirdir Lake gives life to its surroundings with usage values such as fishing, agriculture (especially apple production) and drinking water supply. Almost all of the fish species in the lake, such as crayfish and crayfish, are exported abroad. However, apple production in the region accounts for approximately 20 percent of Turkey's total production. The natural resources and biological diversity values of Lake Eğirdir are threatened by pollution. In particular, agricultural pollution will affect the future of Lake Eğirdir, as in many wetlands and drinking water resources of Turkey. As a result of the excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural activities around the lake, approximately 1800 tons of chemicals are mixed into the soil and water annually. Since the packages of the medicines are not disposed of properly, approximately 70 tons of solid waste is generated annually.
