The main objective of this project was to increase young people's awareness of history and cultural identity, to enable them to discover European values on site and to create active citizenship and social memory awareness in young people by keeping alive in their memories a tragic historical event that took place in Europe during World War II, the Drau Disaster. The focus of our project was to transform the passive knowledge gained from books or movies into an active learning experience by observing historical events on site. By visiting the areas where thousands of Caucasian refugees who lost their lives in the Drau tragedy lived, it was aimed for young people to develop their empathy skills, to gain awareness to prevent historical events from happening again and to keep social memory alive. In line with this goal, we aimed to enable 18-year-old young people who have not had the opportunity to go to Europe before and who face economic and social barriers to get to know Europe, to experience different cultures and to develop a culture of cultural interaction, respect and coexistence. In addition, the project aimed to contribute to strengthening cultural dialogue by seeing European values on site. Specific objectives of the project: - To keep the historical memory alive and pass it on to future generations by visiting the sites of the Drau Disaster, - To increase the knowledge, research and analysis skills of young people by exploring European history and culture on site, - To increase awareness of multiculturalism through cultural experiences in different cities (Budapest, Vienna, Ljubljana, Prague), - To strengthen young people's ability to act collectively, take responsibility and make decisions in a group, - To increase the active participation of the participants in social life and give them the competence to share their experiences in front of the public, - To establish historical ties with the Caucasian diaspora, to provide cultural interaction with Caucasian youth living in Austria, - To reinforce the sense of belonging of individuals by increasing the awareness of cultural identity and to raise social awareness in order to revent tragic events such as exile from happening again in the future, - To ensure that disadvantaged young people have the opportunity to get to know Europe in line with the inclusiveness and equal opportunity goal of the Erasmus+ program, - To create and disseminate a visual memory archive by preparing a documentary titled “A Flower Falls to Drau” with the images taken during the project process, - To raise awareness by announcing the project outputs to a wide audience through local and national media, social media, Youtube and Agency Kafkas. Social and individual objectives of the project: Strengthening young people's awareness of active citizenship by observing European values, democracy and human rights on the ground, To adopt a culture of coexistence in diversity by experiencing different ways of life in Europe, Develop solidarity and empathy skills by observing the social effects of forced migration, refugee and cultural exile concepts in the field, Raising awareness of cultural and social responsibility, Actively participate in the dissemination process by sharing their experiences with their peer groups at the end of the project, Internalization and dissemination of the Erasmus+ spirit. In line with the mission of the Caucasus Foundation, our project has also contributed to the preservation of the cultural heritage of young people, raising awareness of identity among new generations and actively transmitting historical heritage. Beyond the individual benefits, the project has increased the social skills of the participating young people, supported their self-confidence development and has been an important step for them to become more active individuals in the fields of education, volunteering, civil society and active citizenship in the future. As a result, the project aimed to help young people learn from history to build a more just and peaceful society, discover European culture and become European citizens, protect cultural heritage by protecting their identities and contribute to the realization of the potential of disadvantaged young people by supporting the Erasmus+ program's goals of equal opportunities and inclusion.
