Inclusion of marginalised young people

Objectives

The “Shall We Dance?” project aimed to foster intercultural understanding, inclusion, and dialogue among young people from six countries: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, N. Macedonia, Türkiye and Ukraine. By engaging participants in meaningful cultural exchanges, the project sought to promote mutual respect, dismantle stereotypes, and encourage collaboration. The use of traditional folk dances provided an innovative and universally accessible medium for connecting participants and fostering a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity. Our primary goal was to promote social inclusion among young people. Through creative expression in the form of dance, art, and creativity, we aimed to break down the barriers that led to exclusion. By fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance, we empowered marginalized youth to participate fully in their communities. Discrimination was a central concern addressed by our project. We sought to challenge and combat discrimination in all its forms, whether based on ethnicity, nationality, or cultural background. Through shared experiences and intercultural dialogue, participants gained insights that dispelled stereotypes and prejudices. Marginalization was a significant issue faced by many young Europeans. Our project endeavored to address this by providing marginalized youth with opportunities for self-expression and personal growth. We aimed to equip them with the skills and confidence to overcome the obstacles that marginalization often presented. Inclusivity was a cornerstone of our project. We strove to create an inclusive environment where all young people, regardless of their backgrounds, felt valued and appreciated. Through the universal languages of dance and art, we bridged divides and fostered unity. Empowering young people was at the heart of our mission. By engaging in creative activities and collaborative projects, participants gained valuable life skills, including teamwork, communication, and adaptability. These skills empowered them to actively engage in society and become agents of positive change. Active citizenship was a core value of our project. We aimed to inspire participants to become active, responsible citizens who advocated for social inclusion and challenged discrimination in their communities. By fostering empathy and tolerance, we envisioned them as catalysts for a more equitable Europe. Beyond the immediate project activities, we aimed to create a lasting impact on participants. We wanted them to carry the lessons learned and experiences gained throughout their lives. By doing so, they became advocates for social inclusion, champions against discrimination, and allies for marginalized individuals, contributing to a more harmonious European society. The project’s objectives were: 1. To create an environment for profound intercultural dialogues among young participants, fostering mutual respect, understanding, and appreciation for diversity. 2. To utilize traditional folk dances as a tool for promoting inclusion and tolerance, helping participants understand cultural significance while enhancing teamwork, communication, and cultural sensitivity. 3. To challenge and dismantle prejudices and stereotypes through shared experiences and meaningful cultural exchanges. 4. To nurture a shared European identity among participants, emphasizing unity that transcends national borders and inspires active engagement in shaping the future of Europe. The project was designed to achieve these objectives through activities that emphasized cultural exchange, dialogue, and creative collaboration. Participants actively shared their cultural traditions and experiences, enabling them to build mutual understanding and strengthen interpersonal connections. Traditional folk dances were central to the project, serving as a tool for promoting inclusion and tolerance by allowing participants to engage with each other’s heritage in an interactive and hands-on manner. The project also encouraged participants to reflect on their own cultural values and biases, facilitating deeper learning through dialogue and shared experiences. By creating a space for open communication and collaboration, the project ensured that participants could both teach and learn, embodying the principles of peer-to-peer learning. This approach contributed to the personal development of participants while fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. The “Shall We Dance?” project aligned with the goals of the Erasmus+ program by empowering participants to become advocates for inclusion and cultural diversity in their own communities. By focusing on shared experiences and intercultural dialogue, the project successfully created a foundation for ongoing collaboration, understanding, and the promotion of European values.
