The goal of implementing the "Swim Against the Current - A Training on Emotional Intelligence" project was to address the increasing mental health challenges faced by young people across Europe by empowering youth workers. The project aimed to provide youth workers with the tools to develop their emotional intelligence (EI), which is crucial for managing stress, building resilience, and fostering a supportive environment for youth. This project was developed in response to the alarming statistics from the World Health Organization and other valuable institutions, which highlighted the rising suicide rates and the significant impact of mental health issues on youth. The specific objectives of the project were: 1. Empower Youth Workers: To equip youth workers with essential tools for self-discovery, empathy, emotional management, self-awareness, and self-care, benefiting both their personal development and their interactions with young people. 2. Promote Emotional Agility: To encourage participants to develop a non-judgmental approach to their emotions, learn how to regulate and manage them effectively, and build emotional agility to adapt to various situations and challenges. 3. Address Dysfunctional Emotional Patterns: To help youth workers identify and overcome dysfunctional emotional patterns (such as irrational beliefs and negative self-talk) that stem from childhood, and to transform these into healthier, functional emotional responses. 4. Foster Vulnerability and Compassion: To teach participants to embrace vulnerability and compassion, fostering a deeper connection with themselves and others, and enhancing their effectiveness in supporting youth. 5. Enhance Youth Work Quality: To provide space for youth workers to reflect on their role as emotional support figures for young people, improve their resilience and coping strategies, and ultimately enhance the quality of their youth work. 6. Strengthen International Cooperation: To foster cooperation and exchange between youth organizations across Europe, strengthening the international dimension of youth work, and sharing knowledge and experiences. 7. Promote Non-Formal Education (NFE): To enhance the recognition of non-formal education methods by providing youth workers with new, creative tools and methodologies they can use both for themselves and in their work with young people. These objectives aimed to improve both the personal well-being of youth workers and the quality of support they can offer to youth, contributing to the mental health and emotional resilience of young people across Europe.
