Multiculturalism and diversity among young people are crucial elements in shaping a harmonious and prosperous society. Exposure to different cultures and points of view expands young people's horizons and prepares young people to be global citizens. In an interconnected world, understanding and appreciating cultural diversity is essential. With this project Jeugd, Cultuur en Wetenschap vzw (JCW vzw) recognised the urgent need to create an open and fundamental understanding of each other in an increasingly diverse society. While physical borders between countries were constantly shifting, they were less and less of an obstacle to movement. Yet conflicts could still create new dividing lines. Our objective was to broaden participants' perspectives on differences and connections between countries and cultures. We aimed to achieve this by exploring shifting borders and their consequences, both in the context of historical events and recent developments. We wanted to promote not only a deeper understanding of cultural differences, but also highlight common aspects. By exploring these topics in a multicultural group of young people, we expected an enriching learning experience and great mutual benefits. During the ‘Connecting People’ programme, participants explored different themes that revolved around the idea of connecting people across borders. Each day focused on a different theme, and participants were actively encouraged to share personal insights related to that day's focus. Each evening there was a reflection moment to assess what participants had learnt from that day's theme. With each day, their perception of boundaries became more nuanced and broader. By the end of the week, we aimed to create a tangible memory that participants could take home with them, so that they could share the key lessons of this international exchange with others.
