Objectives

1. We want to encourage our local groups to take part in participation initiatives locally and to set them up themselves. For example, by participating in the Debattle program of Bataljong. This way we also reach our youngest members. It is important to do this because we notice that our groups often exist in a space of their own, somewhat socially isolated of the rest of the local community. In this way they come into contact with their neighborhood, relevant partners and hopefully also the municipal administration. Through these contacts we could, for example, put pressure on local administration to strive for more (play) space for children in the city. We also want to encourage our local groups to listen to the voices of their own members. This way they set a good example for the next generation of youth (leaders). 2. We want to keep our older members, youth leaders and national volunteers adequately informed. We will do this through targeted communications, information packets and workshops. Knowledge is a big challenge. Young people want to participate, but often do not know how or where decisions are made. The system of government in our country is complex and this feeds disinterest in elections and ultimately participation. 3. We want to set an example and create a big participation event ourselves (Leidingsraad). We will survey young people beforehand: what do they want to see changed? They can submit motions that we will then discuss in discussion tables at the event itself. The event ends in a big plenary moment where we bring all the proposals to a vote. Proposals that get a positive vote will be incorporated into our policies. In that way we want to show that their voice does have an impact: participation leads to change. We already held a test event last year and it was well received. We now want to anchor this success in our operations and organize this participation event annually. 4. We want to encourage young people in our youth movement who have the right to vote to participate actively and consciously in the elections. For the local and national elections we focus on young people over 18. For the European elections we focus on young people over 16. Young people should be able to speak up and be heard. Their opinion and vote should matter. That way you create a climate in which those young people value governance, policy and politics, and thus also elections. We have extra attention for local elections because in Flanders there is no longer a compulsory voting requirement and young people can obtain the most change here. The European elections also receive extra attention because the right to vote is now being introduced here for young people as young as 16. These four objectives are inextricably linked. So with each initiative we will try to work toward all four goals. With the theme of the year being Aan Zet, we hope not only to bring social issues into the spotlight, but to find continuity for the future. 2024 is also the year in which we write our next policy dossier. We hope to be able to include successful experiences as the Leidingsraad in that dossier and secure them for the coming years.
