Objectives

Jong DOEK: Ownership by and for Young People The goal of Jong DOEK is to give young people ownership within the cultural field. We provide the infrastructure to make activities possible that stem directly from their own interests, ideas, and talents. Young people play an active role within both the project and the broader operations of OPENDOEK, allowing them to develop and apply their skills. The Jong DOEK structure is built on three levels. At each level, we assess the needs and goals of the young participants to ensure they receive the right support and tools to grow. Collaboration and Participation The core group—internally referred to as “de jonkies” (the youngsters)—works closely with the coordinator. Together, they reflect on the development and direction of Jong DOEK. This collaboration takes place in both formal settings (meetings, brainstorming sessions) and informal ones (group activities, team-building events). This dynamic approach ensures young people are at the heart of the process. The project aimed to implement a sustainable youth operation and advisory council within OPENDOEK’s overall structure. Language, Creativity, and Connection The editorial board, composed of language-oriented young people, played an active role in several projects. Many of them are writers or study language and dramaturgy. Through the editorial board, we connect them with OPENDOEK’s adult participants, fostering intergenerational dialogue and exchange. Sustainable Growth and Talent Development Finally, over the past year, Jong DOEK gave young people the opportunity to take their first steps in leading workshops through roles such as assistant director. In doing so, we focus on building long-term relationships with these young talents and offer them pathways to grow within the organization. Ultimately, they can evolve into instructors and mentors, in line with their skills and interests.
