The concept that narrative serves as a powerful tool for motivating behavioural change, influencing opinion of leaders, and persuading decision-makers has become widely accepted in contemporary society. Indeed, the manner in which stories are crafted and conveyed has undergone significant transformation with the increased use of digital and technological advancements. Traditional long-form storytelling and journalism now share the same platform as 140-character tweets and ephemeral graphics on social media channels. Although numerous tools have emerged to reach broad audiences, achieving this has become more challenging than ever. Despite modern-day improvements, certain concerns and needs still require attention. Many young people struggle to express their opinions and experiences on social issues, feeling marginalised and unheard by society. Currently, the world faces serious social and environmental problems such as wars, inequality, and climate change. This negative trend necessitates effective advocacy strategies to foster social change. In 2021, statistics revealed that 94 million people, or 21.5% of the population, were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the European Union. Despite the widespread use of digital media, many young people lacked the necessary skills and mindful expertise to utilise it effectively for storytelling and social change. Recognizing the role of youth in addressing societal problems and amplifying their voices, we, along with our partners, launched this project to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to drive social change, advocacy, and impact on the world. The objectives of our project, which have since been achieved, were as follows: To establish a setting where youth opinions were valued and amplified. To enable young people to use digital storytelling as a tool for advocating positive change and promoting awareness. To foster media literacy skills. To promote youth engagement and advocacy. To provide the tools and training necessary to develop the potential of digital storytelling. To encourage creativity. To empower participants to become active agents of change in addressing social inequalities through digital storytelling.
