Through this project, we were motivated to tackle the challenges faced by island communities, especially their youth. Our goal was to address these issues and bring about positive change. Studies showed that island youth often faced limited opportunities, including access to quality education and job prospects. The European Commission's 'Atlas of Demography' report revealed that youth unemployment rates on islands could be much higher than the national average, reaching up to 25% in certain regions. This led to young people migrating to mainland areas in search of better opportunities, resulting in a brain drain that hampered the sustainable development and economic growth of the islands. Additionally, the increasing presence of foreign investors in island communities was a growing concern, with more foreign-owned businesses and properties leading to the displacement of local businesses and a loss of cultural identity. According to the April 2015 ‘Eurobarometer survey on European youth’, island youth also felt excluded and disconnected from the mainland and the EU. They perceived limited access to opportunities, which had significant implications for their social, economic, and cultural integration. Therefore, our project aimed to: 1) Increase awareness among youngsters about the challenges faced by island communities, such as limited opportunities, brain drain, cultural erosion, and feelings of exclusion; 2) Facilitate meaningful intercultural exchange and understanding, fostering dialogue, empathy, and collaboration between different islands; 3) Empower youngsters from island communities to take an active role in addressing the challenges they faced, providing them with skills, knowledge, and tools for personal and community development; 4) Develop entrepreneurial skills among island youth, enabling them to create sustainable business initiatives and promote economic growth in their communities; 5) Promote the preservation of cultural heritage and traditions within island communities, raising awareness about the importance of maintaining their unique identities; 6) Nurture a sense of active citizenship among island youth, inspiring them to actively participate in decision-making processes and contribute to the development of their communities and the wider EU; 7) Enhance digital literacy skills among island youth, equipping them with the necessary tools to access educational and employment opportunities, bridge the digital divide, and adapt to technological advancements; 8) Provide opportunities for island youth to develop leadership, teamwork, and effective communication skills, empowering them to become agents of change within their communities and beyond; 9) Reinforce the sense of belonging and connection of island youth to the European Union, promoting their active engagement in EU initiatives and fostering a stronger European identity; 10) Promote the new Erasmus+ Programme and its priorities aligned with the European Youth Strategy 2021-2027, the 11 Youth Goals, and the SDGs.
