Our main aim in carrying out the project was for young people from different social and cultural backgrounds to engage in an intensive exchange in order to think together about discrimination and its various manifestations. It was important to us that the participants learn to recognize discrimination in all its facets, reflect on it and find ways to counter it in everyday life. At the same time, the project was intended to help break down prejudices and promote mutual respect and a deeper understanding of other lifestyles and cultures. It was also important to us to give the young people the opportunity to express their own experiences and perspectives creatively. This was done, for example, through the creation of a radio podcast in Lille, which included interviews and street surveys on the topic of discrimination, as well as through the joint production of a song, a sound collage and artistic banners in Cologne. Such creative approaches not only helped to make the debate on discrimination lively and sustainable, but also strengthened the young people's self-confidence and offered them a platform to make their voices heard. Another key aim of the project was to strengthen intercultural skills and promote the European idea. By forming new friendships and gaining insights into the life and history of the respective partner country, the young people grew in mutual understanding and interest. The shared experience of hospitality, official receptions in the town halls and dealing with the special relationship between Cologne and Lille also helped to bring European cohesion to a personal level. Last but not least, the project was intended to have a lasting impact. It was important to us that the young people should also carry their experiences back into their own lives and thus provide impetus for more openness and tolerance in their environment. At the same time, the youth exchange provided a basis for deepening existing partnerships between the participating institutions and initiating further joint projects in order to continue the exchange in the future.
