Objectives

Members of the three partner organizations from Slovenia, Belarus, and Germany joined forces to reflect on what they could achieve together and through which activities they could offer other motivated young people the opportunity to work collaboratively on something positive and produce something tangible. Together, the members decided to take up the topic of “urban gardening” and organize an international youth project around it. Urban gardening projects are practical, visible, and creative, and they enable effective teamwork with tangible results. They foster the competence to develop and implement projects. Because they are long-term in nature—since the garden beds must be maintained and cared for—they also strengthen participants’ sense of responsibility. At the same time, they help address two major challenges in a constructive way: the increasing loss of biodiversity and climate change, which is leading to the overheating of cities and can be countered by creating more green spaces in urban areas. The topic is particularly well suited to encouraging independent youth engagement as well as practicing self-organization and entrepreneurial thinking. For all these reasons, the three partners jointly developed and implemented this project. During the youth exchange, participants learned about innovative projects and were themselves actively involved in gardening activities together. They developed their own concrete ideas, some of which—though not all—they later implemented after the youth exchange within their teams, partly together with other young people.
