The background of the project "Speak Peacefully: Non-Violent Communication in European Youth" was developed in response to the need for improving communication skills among European youth. The project's focus was rooted in the recognition that communication often becomes a source of conflict and misunderstanding, which can lead to broken relationships or even violence. Non-violent communication, also called compassionate communication, was identified as an effective tool to foster peaceful dialogue and resolve conflicts. The project was launched to address several critical issues facing young people in Europe, such as interpersonal violence, hate speech, and cyberbullying, which significantly impact youth's mental health and social well-being. These challenges were identified through a needs analysis based on reports from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the European Commission. The findings indicated that young people in Europe frequently experience interpersonal violence, with almost one in three reporting such incidents, while many also struggle with communication and social skills, which are essential for personal development and future employability. By bringing together 42 young participants from seven EU countries, the project aimed to enhance participants' communication skills, promote non-violent conflict resolution, and cultivate intercultural understanding. This initiative aimed not only to teach practical communication strategies but also to inspire a culture of peace and cooperation among European youth, who are seen as the future leaders and decision-makers of the continent The project was designed with several specific sub-goals to address the broader objective of fostering non-violent communication and peaceful conflict resolution among European youth. The sub-goals of the project are: 1. Enhancing Communication Skills 2. Promoting Intercultural Dialogue and Mutual Understanding 3. Developing Conflict Resolution Skills 4. Increasing Awareness of Non-Violent Communication’s Impact 5. Empowering Youth as Agents of Change 6. Encouraging Active Citizenship and Youth Participation 7. Creating Long-Term Impact on Communities 8. Reducing Interpersonal Violence and Cyberbullying 9. Supporting Personal Development 10. Fostering Partnerships and Youth Networks. These sub-goals worked collectively to not only develop individual skills among the participants but also to contribute to a broader culture of peace, mutual respect, and non-violent communication within European communities
