Objectives

In the project, we combined the content “Democracy in Europe” with the learning method “Betzavta” and the tools “Media and Creative Workshops”. Our aim in the project was to bring the EU together with young people - the first goal of the EU Youthgoals as part of the EU youth strategy “Engage, Connect, Empower”. Various workshops were designed to strengthen young people's media skills and political self-determination. Particularly in view of the increasing importance of (social) media in young people's everyday lives, the demands on their media skills are also increasing exponentially. Social media are increasingly being used as a coping tool for key development issues, which include in particular the realization of self-determination, the pursuit of autonomy, the search for a (gender) identity and the shaping of social relationships. For young people, the Internet also manifests itself as an expansion of (political) participation and opportunities for action, but the reflected use of media only plays a marginal role. To counteract this trend, we implemented various workshops to enable young people to use media responsibly, critically and creatively in line with their age, for instance by making short films. Furthermore, we wanted to use the participatory Betzavta method to introduce young people to the fundamental values of Europe and to illustrate the added value of Europe in order to strengthen a European understanding / sense of belonging. Above all, the content of the project focused on participation and strengthening democracy, values, interests and people. In particular, questions such as: “What holds Europe together? What challenges do we face today in order to secure or enable peace in the long term?” were to be answered. We also pursued the approach of strengthening cross-border relationships in civil society and reducing asymmetries and prejudices. The young people should see themselves more as part of the political process and the democratic way of life in order to gain a European interpretation and strengthen their European awareness, which is based on a critical, multi-perspective examination of the EU's aspirations and reality.
