The primary objective of the Folk Gaming project was to address two pressing social challenges: rural depopulation (leading to the loss of folklore and traditional knowledge) and the limited, often commercialised, socialisation opportunities for young people in urban areas. The project aimed at bridging these gaps by fostering intergenerational connections and cultural awareness through the creation of board games centred around folklore. Key Objectives: Preservation and Dissemination of Folklore: The project aimed to document and adapt endangered folk traditions into engaging and games (more accessible to newer generations). This process encouraged a critical, respectful representation of diverse cultures, countering stereotypes while preserving cultural depth and authenticity. Youth Empowerment and Creative Skill Development: By involving young participants in the complete development cycle of board games (from research and design to prototyping, testing, and iteration) the project enhanced their creative, technical, and project management skills. The entire process was digitalized to facilitate broader dissemination and encourage learning within the digital ecosystem. Cultural Integration and Social Connection: Folk Gaming also aims to help young people familiarise themselves with local traditions and customs from other regions within Europe. Through collaborative game design, young people from diverse cultural backgrounds could connect, fostering mutual understanding and social cohesion. Sustainable and Accessible Recreation: The project promoted an eco-friendly approach to leisure by encouraging the creation of board games, which can be produced with minimal resources. This approach opposed the prevailing consumer-driven entertainment culture and demonstrated that meaningful social activities could be sustainable and low-cost. Pathways to Professional Development: While primarily focused on amateur game creation, the project also planned to offer insights into commercial game production. Participants learned about design phases, prototyping, and how to approach publishers, providing them with potential career pathways in game development.
