The context: Since early 2022, young people from Slovenia and Germany have been involved in the “Travel Different for Future” project. Over the course of the project, the participants developed five 90-minute workshops. The ideas for these workshops were created during the first Slovenian-German youth exchange, which took place in the summer of 2022. Out of the participants, a group emerged that remained fairly consistently active over a period of about two years. Since early 2023, the volunteers oft he project have conducted more than 160 workshops with school classes and other youth groups. At the suggestion of some of the active young people, the idea arose to involve additional partner countries—something that happened for the first time through the youth exchange documented here. In mid-2023, the youth hostel associations of Spain and Portugal were successfully recruited as cooperation partners in the project. The partners sought Spanish and Portuguese young people who have now been involved in the project since April 2024. During the youth exchange in August 2024, they then had the opportunity to get to know the other participants not only online, as before, but also in person - and all facets of the project For the participants from Spain and Portugal, this youth exchange in Germany was a major motivation to become active in the project and a good opportunity for internal group-building, as the participants from Spain and Portugal did not know each other beforehand and live in different regions of Spain and Portugal. At the same time, the youth exchange in summer 2024 offered the possibility to involve new active participants from Slovenia and Germany in the project. Some long-standing participants finished their studies, went abroad for a semester, etc., and could or would no longer be involved in the project as intensively. The youth exchange was the ideal opportunity to integrate new participants into the project. During the youth exchange, participants who had already been active in the project for two years were able to pass on their experiences, the project spirit, and their knowledge to new volunteers. At the same time, the youth exchange gave the newly involved young people the opportunity to contribute their own ideas, set new impulses, and make the “Travel Different for Future” project their own. All of this was successfully achieved during the youth exchange in August 2024. The objectives achieved can be described more specifically as follows: It was possible to integrate and motivate newly active young people from Slovenia, Germany, and especially from Spain and Portugal to participate in the project. Most of them are still active in the project (as of November 2025). Young people who had already been active in the project for a longer period shared their experiences with the newcomers, which was a positive experience and strengthened their connection to the project. The various activities of the youth exchange promoted group-building and thus also identification with the “Travel Different for Future” project and its participants. It was possible to educate the participants on different aspects of tourism—particularly sustainable tourism—while also incorporating experiences from the tourism sectors of the four countries involved. Newly active young people became familiar with the different facets of the project and acquired the skills to independently lead two of the five “Travel Different” workshops. Furthermore, the participants acquired various educational and pedagogical competencies that help them successfully conduct workshops. The youth exchange was also used to evaluate the project and the cooperation between the partners and participants. At the same time, new ideas for future activities emerged, including ideas for new workshop formats, some of which have now been fully developed with the involvement of active participants. As mentioned earlier, through the youth exchange, “Travel Different” teams were successfully established in Spain and Portugal. These teams have already conducted several workshops themselves and continue to be active. As a result, the project has become more consolidated and established, and the number of active participants has increased significantly thanks to the youth exchange. The participants from all four countries meet online once a month to coordinate their activities, develop new ideas, exchange experiences within the project, and stay connected with one another.
