In the project, we focused on the pervasive and destructive issue of hate speech. Spanning ten days and involving 50 young participants from Germany, Türkiye, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, and the Republic of North Macedonia, the project was held at Gebze Öğretmen Evi, Gebze, Kocaeli, Türkiye, from 17.11.2024 to 26.11.2024. It was structured to provide a comprehensive, transformative experience. Here were the objectives we achieved within the framework of youth work practice: Comprehensive Awareness and Education: The cornerstone of the project was to deeply sensitize participants about the issue of hate speech. Rather than merely providing definitions and legal frameworks, we engaged participants in interactive games that prompted them to examine their own attitudes and assumptions. These activities were designed to dissect the issue of hate speech from various angles, thereby providing a nuanced, multi-dimensional understanding. Skill Development for Critical Discourse: In a world that is increasingly polarized, the ability to think critically and engage in meaningful discourse was indispensable. We held sessions that challenged participants to examine existing biases and prejudices. Various debate formats and discussion forums served as platforms for participants to engage in critical thinking and public speaking, thereby honing their argumentation skills. Fostering Social Cohesion and Cross-Cultural Understanding: Another pivotal objective was the promotion of social cohesion and cross-cultural understanding. Given that the participants represented a variety of backgrounds, we employed a range of interactive activities that required them to work in ever-changing teams. These team-based challenges fostered new relationships, deepened existing ones, and exposed participants to different cultural norms and values. Ensuring Emotional and Psychological Well-being: Emotional and psychological well-being was a critical aspect that threaded through the entire program. Ice-breaking activities and team-building exercises helped to create a psychologically safe space where participants freely expressed their opinions and emotions. The goal was to build an environment where everyone felt valued and heard. Instilling Civic Responsibility and Encouraging Active Participation: We aimed to go beyond the theoretical and provided participants with practical, hands-on experience in community engagement and activism. Participants were engaged in local community research projects, where they interacted with the public to gain insights into prevailing attitudes and experiences related to hate speech. Future Planning for Sustained Impact: The final objective was future planning and sustainability. The program concluded with reflective sessions that encouraged participants to apply their learnings to real-world scenarios. The intention was to instill a sense of responsibility and commitment in participants, thereby ensuring that the project had a long-term, sustained impact on combating hate speech. Through these objectives, the project equipped participants with the necessary tools to become informed, responsible citizens who could actively contribute to combating hate speech. We employed a range of non-formal and informal learning methods, adapting and pivoting based on real-time feedback and evaluations.
