Objectives

The primary aspiration of this project was to advance the cause of mental health awareness and well-being among youth, particularly in a cross-cultural setting. While the program was expansive in its reach, its objectives were meticulously outlined to align with the broader scope of youth work practice. Firstly, the project instilled a nuanced understanding of mental health issues among young people, transcending beyond the mere dissemination of facts. This was accomplished through a pedagogical approach that merged experiential learning with formal instruction, offering participants a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter. The targeted workshops and interactive sessions furnished participants with the tools to recognize mental health issues, not just in themselves but also in others. This was invaluable from the perspective of youth work practice as it nurtured a generation of empathetic and informed individuals capable of peer mentoring and grassroots advocacy. Secondly, the program endeavored to destigmatize mental health issues, a stigma that often impeded effective discussion and subsequent intervention. Through open forums and shared experiences, it was fostered an environment where mental health was discussed candidly and without judgment. The inclusion of different cultural perspectives and personal stories challenged stereotypes and misconceptions, thereby catalyzing a paradigm shift in how mental health was perceived among youth. This objective was pivotal in youth work practice, as combating stigma created a more inclusive environment conducive to effective mental health management. Another critical objective was to empower participants through skill acquisition, particularly in areas of effective communication, stress management, and emotional intelligence. The program was designed to be a transformative experience, where participants left with a tangible skill set that had immediate applicability in their personal and professional lives. This empowerment model was particularly relevant in youth work practice as it fostered self-reliance and enhanced life skills, equipping young people to face the multifaceted challenges of today’s world. Additionally, the project aimed to create a toolkit and website that served as a ready resource for mental health. This toolkit and website compiled evidence-based practices, peer experiences, and other resources that could be used by future Erasmus+ participants and other youth networks. The focus here was on sustainability and creating a ripple effect, extending the benefits of this program to a broader audience. From the perspective of youth work practice, this objective aligned well with the principle of sustainability and long-term impact. Finally, the social integration and network-building aspects of the program could not be overstated. The aim was to create a robust network of like-minded individuals committed to the cause of mental health. This network not only provided emotional support but also served as a think tank for future initiatives, projects, and collaborations. This community-building element was crucial in youth work practice, as it accentuated the collective over the individual, thereby multiplying the impact each participant could have. The objectives of this project were intricately interwoven to offer a comprehensive, impactful, and lasting contribution to the field of youth mental health. Through the multifaceted activities and interactions planned, the program aimed to create an enduring legacy that resonated well beyond its 10-day duration, truly embodying the essence and objectives of youth work practice.
