Our story as Dreaming OPEnly began with #Voices4Weapons, a project created to test the potential of hip-hop disciplines to promote self-empowerment and creative expression in non-formal educational contexts. The aim was to create meaningful and safe learning spaces for young people to explore non-violent communication and peaceful behavior. The success confirmed our thesis: hip-hop was an effective and useful tool to connect with our target group. It conveyed messages in a language that was understandable and appealing to young people. Thanks to this experience, we gained valuable insights, practical experience and expanded our repertoire of methods and tools for working on these issues. BTR was not just a continuation, but a further development of the path we had embarked on three years earlier - with the intention of integrating the lessons learned from this first and subsequent experiences. Our focus was on the history of hip-hop culture, which is much more than just a music genre. As a youth movement, it represents a complex web of narratives of empowerment, unity and social inclusion, and symbolizes resilience - a chronicle of communities that found strength and solace in artistic unity. BTR was committed to giving hip-hop back its original power as a catalyst for social change and passing this essence on to young people. The goal was to collectively create a space where every voice was heard and where creativity served as a means of self-empowerment and connection. By highlighting the history of a culture that emerged in marginalized contexts, we gave more meaning to this topic and promoted empathy and values of inclusion. Our aim was to counteract the problematic spread of gang culture and violent behavior among young people, especially those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. We also wanted to raise awareness of the consumerist and sexist influence that mainstream hip-hop culture often exerts. Fundamentally, the aim was to counter the spread of violent, hateful and harmful messages, to challenge them and instead focus on creativity, solidarity, participation and self-esteem. Our organization focuses on the potential of art to bring about sustainable and meaningful change, as we are aware that the younger generations are facing particularly challenging times and there is an urgent need to find solutions to the collective crises of our society. In this context, the objectives of the project were 1- To empower young people by encouraging them to express themselves through art and providing them with the tools to do so; 2- To raise awareness of the social power of artistic expression; 3- Bringing together young people who have the same passion through a shared creative process; 4- Using hip-hop culture to raise awareness of issues such as social exclusion, discrimination, racism, sexism, poverty, frustration, etc. 5- Demonstrating different ways in which young people can raise their voices and actively participate in society; 6- Empowering young people and improving their foreign language skills through an intercultural learning experience through the means of non-formal education; 7- Raising awareness of European projects and EU values. These objectives were linked to the specific objectives of KA1 Youth Exchanges as follows: - Objectives 3, 4, 6 and 7 were linked to the promotion of intercultural dialog and learning and the feeling of being European. -The seven objectives of the project were linked to the development of young people's skills and attitudes -Objectives 3, 4, 6 and 7 were linked to the strengthening of European values and the reduction of prejudices and stereotypes; -All 7 objectives of the project were related to raising awareness of societal issues and therefore fostered engagement in society and active citizenship.
