By implementing this project we wanted to bring into life a Youth Gathering format for the very special UNESCO-World Heritage Site `Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe` composed by 93 component parts in 18 European countries. The project achieved that participants, group leaders and accompanying persons from 6 partner regions located in the vicinity of a component part of the transnational serial UNESCO-World Heritage came together for the first time and created as an international team this 1rst World Heritage Beech Forest Youth Gathering. This World Heritage site is very special in the UNESCO- portfolio as it is composed by. All parties of the Beech forest World Heritage site are responsible to cooperate for its conservation, but also have the duty to conduct educational activities and contribute to international and intercultural understanding. Actually within the big partnership of the World Heritage site this youth exchange activity stated the 1rst multilateral youth event. Even it represents the first multilateral activity engaging participants from the local/ regional level. In our case all partners came from component parts of very rural areas and thus participants in their daily life do not have many international connections and exchange opportunities. Implementing this multilateral Youth Gathering was a big dream of the World Heritage partners as it represents the transnational character of the site and enables the young generation to live the spirit of cooperation and connectedness. The vision was to create this activity as a first step to be hosted afterwards in other countries and component parts of the World Heritage. The project achieved that the baton was taken over by Central Balkan National Park administration applying to Erasmus+ funding for a 2nd Youth Gathering in their component part with all partners involved and one additional World Heritage partner from Croatia to be implemented in 2026. So we achieved to create a functioning and enthusiastic partnership within the project as well as the follow-up activity of a 2nd Youth Gathering as very meaningful results. Addressing the needs laid out in the proposal the objectives of the project were: 1) Empowered and encouraged youth prepared with skills for active participation in social and societal processes. 2) Enhanced understanding and emotional connection to nature (including ecosystem services). 3) Enhanced international understanding and cooperation for sustainable development. 4) Enhanced skills and personal experience of the contribution of nature to health and well-being. Referring to the evaluation of the young participants as well as participant reports of the group leaders in the beneficiary module laying out the impacts of the project on participants and partner organisations we achieved all the above-named objectives through the Youth Gathering and thus contributed jointly to the implementation of the European Youth Strategy, the European Biodiversity Strategy as well as to the UNESCO-goals. The European beech forests are a very special treasure showing remnants of well-conserved old-growth beech forests in different regions of Europe, where naturally the landscape would be shaped by these forest types. So, they represent Europe´s Wilderness. These places are impressive forest environments where people can experience extraordinary nature and thus represent valuable learning sites in general, but also for objective four. For young people it is important to find out, experience and learn to have awareness on what contributes to their mental and physical health.
