Objectives

The project “Trans Empowerment Film Exchange” aimed at bringing together 36 trans*, inter, non-binary participants from Germany, Spain and France in two separate but connected youth exchanges and to promote connection, skill-sharing and empowerment between different trans*, inter and non-binary young people in the film sector, exchanging and learning through a range of skills and experiences. This project was catered towards trans*, inter and non-binary young people with priority to those affected by racism, ableism and classism. Indeed, one of our main objectives was to offer film-making training and networking with trans* film professionals for trans*, inter and non-binary youth who experience systemic discrimination. By doing this, we were building means to combat their reduced access to film-making schools, resources and jobs in this field, while counteracting them being constantly exposed to harmful misrepresentation of trans* people on mainstream media. The goal of our two youth exchanges was to provide equipment, knowledge and mentorship for those lacking these resources with an emphasis on self-expression, in order to foster creativity and maximize its positive impact, to tackle isolation by building a creative community and professional network amongst trans*, inter and non-binary young people and youth workers, as well as for trans*, inter and non-binary young people sharing through audiovisual media their own stories and experiences as experts of their own lives. The first gathering’s objective was to offer participants to acquire ground film-making skills in various departments and to produce their own short films in teams. The second gathering’s objective was to provide already experienced young media creators with a space to develop their craft, network and exchange on strategies to navigate the various challenges of film-making environments (from general hostile and draining work dynamics to a specific lack of access to employment for marginalized communities and discriminatory power dynamics within the film industry.) While EYFA have years of experience working with the ERASMUS+ Youth program, this project was planned to allow less experienced partner associations stepping into roles of responsibility under the guidance of EYFA office members. Consequently, the TEFE project aimed at empowerment and community building as well on the organizational level, by fostering capacity building and strengthening the network of Sylvestres and La Bassa Mar, both more recent trans-lead associations, and therefore supporting the growth and resilience of diverse organizations who will continue to foster the empowerment of young people with fewer opportunities.
