Objectives

Nature- and outdoor-education activities, when implemented well, can provide significant support for young people in their development and orientation. This is confirmed by various studies. Nevertheless, this topic remains underrepresented in youth work. Many highly suitable methods of nature and outdoor education are still largely unknown, even though they can strengthen the relationship to nature, promote participants’ social skills, and help people relax and feel comfortable. While innovative nature- and outdoor-education methods are gaining increasing importance in Germany, they remain largely unknown in Belarus. The training that was carried out aimed to help change this situation by training 20 educators and youth workers — both volunteers and full-time professionals active in youth work — who were already engaged in the field of Education for Sustainable Development in Belarus and Germany. This was achieved through the development of competencies, new practical experiences, the evaluation of participants’ previous experiences, and collegial exchange. The goal was to become familiar with innovative methods, practice and adapt them, and subsequently integrate them into the participants’ own educational activities. Outdoor projects not only rarely take place in youth work, but they also often lack a well-founded educational concept with clearly defined objectives. This training sought to change that within and around the participating organizations and among the participants themselves. Particular emphasis was placed on considering the social aspects and potential of nature and outdoor education.
