Beats Of Unity - Exploring Hip Hop’s Pedagogical Power (BOU), was a Training Course, that will involve 24 Youth Workers coming from 6 countries, namely Germany, Spain, Poland, Italy, Greece, and France. It aimed to explore and use the potential of Hip Hop and Art to develop non-formal education pedagogical methodologies for Youth Work, as well as to create artistic and cultural events in local communities. The Project was composed of one APV and two mobilities. The APV was 5 total days and the mobilities were 6 working days and 2 travel days each. The first one in Leipzig, in December 2024. The second in Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Madrid, Spain, in April 2025. The project was the result of the collaboration between Dreaming OPEnly (DOPE) and Madrid Outdoor Education (MOE). The relationship between DOPE and MOE is strong and has been tested in other projects. With BOU, we aimed to develop an innovative methodology based on Hip Hop and offer quality training for YW and educators where we put together our expertise. This project was the first step that build up the foundation to create a long-term collaboration that will be channeled through a KA2 to keep exploring the benefits and possibilities of Hip Hop as a pedagogical tool of transformation. In both mobilities of BOU participants were able to develop a tangible outcome. During the first one the participants, supported by the facilitators and the artists involved, create a Toolkit of NFE methodologies for Youth Work based on Hip Hop, and learned how to organize a cultural event. In the second one, these methods and knowledge were put into action, as we organized an event in the city of Rivas-Vaciamadrid, where the participants implemented workshops based on the Toolkit developed. BOU involved professional Hip Hop Artists, who contribute with their skills and knowledge to reach the high-quality standards that we aimed to. They held workshops, shared their experiences and competencies, and at the same time were empowered and enriched by the project. Currently, there is a lack of NFE methodologies that can talk the same language as the young people they should be developed for, and that can be stimulating and interesting for them, especially for the ones that live in disadvantaged situations, are marginalized, and have in general fewer opportunities. Furthermore, we also witness a lack of methodologies that are based on Hip Hop, which is extremely counterproductive, because if used properly it can be an extremely useful tool for Youth Work and education. Hip Hop has immense power as an artistic, social, and educational movement that can contribute towards the shift to a more inclusive and open society, and empower young people, especially the ones that suffer forms of marginalization. We know that Hip-Hop can be a powerful and attractive approach for youth as it is an essential part of mainstream culture and it is the language that they speak every day. However often young people, especially the ones who live in disadvantaged contexts, wrongly associate Hip Hop with violence, drug abuse, and in general as a divisive force. With this project, we wanted to promote what are the original values of Hip Hop such as solidarity, community, creativity, and the improvement of communities. The issues and needs that BOU wanted to address were: - The lack of NFE methodologies based on Hip Hop and Art. - The lack of Youth Work methods that are captivating for young people. - The lack of tools to work with people with fewer opportunities. - The lack of involvement of people with fewer opportunities in E+. - Lack of knowledge in YW of what is NFE and which are its methods. - Lack of tools and skills as facilitators in YW. - Lack of mentoring skills in YW. BOU’s objectives were: -To develop and test an NFE pedagogical methodology based on the Hip Hop principles. - To use the power of Hip Hop and Art mediums for social transformation. - To develop tools and methods that YW will use to empower young people. - To develop NFE methods that use fresh and captivating language for young people. - To provide the tools to reach youngsters and engage them in the transformation of their communities. - To develop a participatory process that will allow the establishment of a Hip Hop educators and organizations network. - To support youth workers’ growth as facilitators of non-formal education activities. - To implement a participatory and community process that will be the foundation for a KA2 program. - To improve the mentoring and coaching skills of youth workers. - To involve YW with fewer opportunities in the E+ program. - To create a cultural event, and share methodologies to organize it. - To raise awareness about European values and the E+ program. - To promote Hip Hop and its values in local communities.
