Objectives

Antisemitism is omnipresent in European societies today - whether in the form of anti-Jewish prejudices, Holocaust denial, conspiracy narratives, or negative images of Israel. Antisemitism threatens the lives of Jews and the fundamental order of a democratic and diverse Europe. At the same time, there is a widespread lack of knowledge about Jewish life in Europe and about Israeli society. The project “Facing Antisemitism in Europe! Education in Europe – Encounter with Israel – Implications for Youth Work” was aimed at professionals in youth and educational work across Europe, who are trained in a long-term, process-oriented, and self-reflective learning environment to address antisemitism. The project combined learning about antisemitism and Jewish life in Europe with an educational study visit to Israel’s diverse society. Through a combination of knowledge acquisition, self-reflection, perspective-changing, and personal encounters, the program equips participants sustainably to address antisemitism and hostility toward Israel. By jointly developing and discussing concepts and standards, the project ultimately seeks to transfer these insights into youth policy practice and to promote antisemitism-sensitive youth and educational work throughout Europe. At the end of the project, each participant designed their own project to implement in their local context, working with their respective target groups (youth in various settings). Objectives: - Learning about the history and present of antisemitism in the European countries participating in the project. - Gaining insights into Jewish life and experiencing encounters with Jewish people in the European countries participating in the project. - Gaining insights and experiencing encounters with people of different personal and collective identities in the diverse society of Israel today. - Gaining insights into forms of Israel-related antisemitism in the participating European countries in the context of a complex, public discourse on the history and present of the Middle East conflict. - Reflection on personal biographic and work experiences to the following topics: (German) National Socialism and its consequences in Europe, history and present of antisemitism in Europe, Israel as a Jewish state in the Middle East, challenges of discrimination-critical and antisemitism-sensitive education and encounter work in Europe. - Developing new educational projects addressing antisemitism in all its forms within the various organizations represented by the participants.
