Through the work youth workers do on a daily basis allows them to be constantly updated with the nowaday young person and what are the struggles they go through. These particular young people who were part of this project, youth workers, knew them before and worked with them in group settings, but also one-to-one. Youth workers know how much these incredible young people are struggling with self-belief and constant doubt. Even recent statistics by the World Health Organization shows that around 13% of the young people today between the ages of 10 -19 years old suffer from some sort of mental health issue mainly depression, anxiety and behavioral problems. Our young people are no different, their childhood traumas have unfortunately paved the way to developing some mental health issues. Experiencing parents divorce, substance abuse or even death at a very young age will leave its mark. Additionally, experiencing verbal and physical abuse from their peers has added mistrust to life, and towards people and their ability to make the child feel safe in this world. This project idea was very much inspired by the same young people. Youth workers wished to show them that even though they were not responsible for their parents or peers' actions, they are now responsible to heal themselves from these awful past experiences with the help of trusted adults. So this idea of gathering together young people from different cultural backgrounds and showing them that they are not alone in these struggles of life became really good. Because sharing each other's stories, being vulnerable and supporting each other would leave a positive impact on young people's mental health. The group of young people from Estonia, Malta and Spain were formulated by the youth workers who had met previously on training course and discussed this idea amongst themselves, realizing they all have young people struggling with mental health. Young people were very eager to learn more about how other countries' young people are coping when it comes to the area of mental health. As these mental issues are hard it is important to show young people that they are capable of overcoming hard things. The best way to show it was through using their body and nature, as young people nowadays spend a lot of time in their heads, but not enough in their bodies. Body is a great tool to use in order to regulate our emotions and thoughts. Therefore the mission was to help them heal through connecting them with their bodies. After having an online meeting between the young people and establishing the objectives of this project the Spanish participants suggested that for this youth exchange we make use of the Camino de Santiago. This was a perfect idea as Camino has both nature and the physical aspect that we were looking for. The main aim of this project was to help participants to learn more about mental health wellbeing and how to strengthen our mindset to be able to overcome difficulties that life might present to us. The objectives of the project were: - To help participants learn more about how other young people with different cultural backgrounds are facing and dealing with similar situations. - To instill a sense of psychological resilience for participants to use. - To help participants increase self-efficacy. - To help us all reconnect with nature and ourselves. - To help us to continue building a lasting relationship with our youth workers. In order for us to reach our aim and objectives the project was divided in 4 parts. Part 1 was the application stage where we brainstormed for ideas and wrote the project together. Part 2 kicked off when the project was accepted and young people together with their youth workers planned all the logistical stuff and started physical training to be prepared for the Camino roads. Part 3 was the implementation of the Camino de Santiago. The walk consisted of around 140KM and it was a challenge we never had done before. It very much expanded our comfort zone and taught us to overcome challenges that were presented to us. Part 4 is finalizing the project and gathering all information for the final report, whilst the young together with their youth workers continue strengthening their relationship.
