Objectives

The project "Be Active YOUth in EU" was designed to address the growing concern regarding the limited participation of young people in European democratic processes. One of the primary reasons for this lack of engagement is the insufficient knowledge and understanding of how the European Union (EU) operates, as well as the impact it has on their daily lives. The main objectives of this project were to educate young participants on the structure, policies, and role of the EU using non-formal learning methods, enabling them to grasp how decisions made at the European level influence their rights, opportunities, and futures. Additionally, the project aimed to strengthen their sense of European identity and promote active citizenship by providing them with the tools and motivation to engage in democratic participation, particularly in the European Parliamentary Elections. Another key objective was to foster intercultural understanding and cooperation among young people from different EU member states by organizing interactive activities that encouraged dialogue and collaboration. By working together on research, discussions, and creative projects, the participants were able to form connections that transcended national borders and reinforced the principle of unity in diversity. Furthermore, the project sought to inspire young people to take initiative in their local communities by equipping them with the skills to create digital campaigns and other outreach initiatives to promote youth participation in European affairs. Through this project and its activities, the young participants developed not only on a theoretical level but also in skills and mentality aspect their capacity to understand, discuss and debate about the EU and its developments, but also strengthened their skills “behavior” of an active, interested and concerned European citizen. As a core impact, they engaged with each other, thus creating a multicultural cooperative environment for the activity, but also with people from the local community of Chania, and got a very spherical and pluralistic idea of the opinions around the European Union developments as well as the different realities and interactions from local to national and then European level in political and social affairs.
