Desire project was intended to draw attention to the impact of gender-based discrimination and gender stereotypes on individuals' life experiences. It aimed to bring change for gendered individual attitudes and behaviors. The objectives of our project that we achieved during its implementation are the following: We provided participants with a non-formal learning opportunity to develop a basic understanding of gender equality and different forms of gender-based discrimination. We promoted awareness of gender-based discrimination in different countries. We encouraged the exchange of personal experiences and best practices against any form of discrimination, inequality and conflicts. We provided young people with additional and creative forms of non-verbal communication and embodied forms of expression skills. We gave young people new tools to improve self-expression, personal development and self-acceptance. Also, we raised awareness to the power of artistic action and dance performance in the field of prevention and empowerment, by creating and sharing with the participants a flash mob in Nafplio to promote gender equality and what they have learnt during the project. During the project, participants used embodiment, non-verbal communication, dance, and performative arts as tools to question gender stereotypes, reclaim desires, and build more inclusive ways of relating to themselves and others. This combination of personal exploration and collective artistic work strengthened both individual empowerment and social inclusion. Indeed the belief rooted back in this approach was that it is impossible to address Social Inclusion without taking into account gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ rights enhancement and sexual empowerment. At the same time, gender based discrimination leaves little or no space at all for personal expression, which leads to the social exclusion of anyone different or unique. What we addressed was how these forms of violence and discrimination do not affect only at the political and social level, but also their significant impact on an individual's daily life, beginning with how people perceive themself and their bodies. In addition to this, there is also the matter of individual desire. On a societal level, there is an attempt to normalise individual desire, control it and place it in predefined categories. However, one’s desire cannot be standardized or labelled, instead, it is transformative energy and force. Our goal then has been for the participants to feel empowered and comfortable with their desires and the ones of others, exploring these issues specifically through embodiment activities.
