Objectives

The intervention of people in the environment and the negative effects of these interventions gained momentum after the Second World War. The increase in the level of welfare has started to cause problems of climate change and environmental pollution. As a result of all these negativities, the life of living things has been endangered and negative situations have arisen. In the studies carried out to reduce these problems, it was aimed to clean the environment and make it more livable, but the result was not as desired and they turned into projects that caused environmental problems to grow. In order to leave a more livable and clean world to our future generations, it is necessary to act today and to inform our families and children in this direction. Ecological literacy is a concept that addresses exactly this problem. This concept, which was first used by Paul Risser in 1986, means to have an idea about the situations that pollute the environment and environmental problems, and to offer solutions in the face of the negativities that these situations may create. In addition to the concept of ecological literacy, climate activism is one of the concepts used in this regard. In its modern sense, Activism can be defined as deliberate action by a group for social change. Climate activism, which has become widespread especially among the youth in this period, aims to inform people and other governments by taking actions on climate change and environmental protection. At the beginning of the 70's, various solution proposals in Europe began to be found in the environmental pollution surrounding the world. As the first global action to address these issues, 113 countries and 1200 delegates came together for the Stockhol Declaration under the leadership of the UN. Soon after, the UNEP-United Nations Environment Program was established. These two steps have been the starting point of the ideas and activities about the environment. Since these years, the EU has prepared 8 Environmental Action Plans and signed the European Green Agreement in 2019, showing that it attaches importance to the environment. With these activities, it tries to achieve its goal of reducing the use of natural resources and, on the other hand, achieving economic growth and zeroing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Kyoto Protocol, which was put into effect around the world, accelerated the activist movements towards global climate problems. In 2018, these movements, which had their brightest period thanks to the school strike initiated by the 15-year-old Swedish Greta Thunberg, realized that despite the activities put forward on climate problems and increasing environmental pollution, young people did not have the necessary information about environmentally friendly life and did not show the necessary importance on environmental pollution. Considering the data of the most prominent states in the world on climate change, Sweden with 75%, Latvia with 60% and Germany with an average rate of 55%. In this regard, the worst countries are Bulgaria at the rate of 40% and Turkey at the rate of 35%. (New Climate Institute/2019) In order to prevent the ongoing climate changes around the world and to increase these rates, some measures should be taken. One of these measures is to raise the awareness of the youth in the society and thus to create an ecologically literate society. Our project, prepared in line with this information, is to make young people aware of the positive/negative effects of people on the environment in general and the environment on people. Young people who actively participate in the measures and struggles to be taken in this direction will increase their motivation and reduce the effects of climate change worldwide. Our specific goals are to recruit: 1. To introduce young people to the concepts of activism and ecological literacy and to enable them to have knowledge about these issues. 2. To show the negativities caused by the unconscious behaviors of people on climate and environmental issues and to raise awareness among young people about the precautions that can be taken against these negativities and environmental protection. 3. To increase the equipment of young people on the issues of protecting the environment and combating climate change by showing the good practices applied to protect the environment around the world to young people.
