Objectives

We brought together 35 young participants and group leaders from Greece, Sweden, Slovenia, Italy, and Romania for a youth exchange in Corfu, Greece, from 7 to 15 November 2024. The project focused on human rights, personal boundaries, sex education, and diversity to provide participants with the tools and confidence to advocate for inclusion and equality in their communities. We created a safe environment where participants could exchange ideas, share personal experiences, and discuss sensitive topics in a respectful way. The youth exchange gave them opportunities to build friendships, challenge stereotypes, and gain new knowledge that could be used in their personal lives. Participants shared different perspectives on human rights challenges in their countries and learned practical ways to promote inclusion. An important goal was to introduce Erasmus+ opportunities to participants, especially those unfamiliar with European projects. We aimed to show how Erasmus+ can offer personal and professional growth, encouraging participants to continue exploring European youth programs. One major outcome was the creation of an open-source online guide titled "Rights and Boundaries: A Youth Guide to Inclusion and Erasmus+." The guide includes information on human rights, personal boundaries, and Erasmus+ opportunities and is available online to inspire other young people across Europe. Creating the guide gave participants a platform to share what they learned and help spread the project’s values. We also aimed to create a lasting impact by equipping participants with practical tools and knowledge they could continue using after the project. Participants were encouraged to advocate for inclusion in their local communities. The project helped strengthen the partner organizations, especially those with less experience in Erasmus+, by giving them new methods and confidence to manage similar initiatives. We set 8 main objectives, and through the youth exchange, we successfully achieved all of them: 1. Promote a deeper understanding of human rights. Participants learned what human rights are, how they are protected or violated, and why they are essential in today’s world. They discussed various human rights issues and how to take action. 2. Empower young people to advocate for human rights. The project encouraged participants to speak up for human rights and promote inclusion in their communities. They also learned advocacy strategies and shared ideas on positive change. 3. Encourage healthy personal boundaries and respectful relationships. The sessions focused on personal boundaries, consent, and communication. Participants reflected on their own boundaries and learned to build respectful relationships. 4. Celebrate diversity and challenge stereotypes. Participants took part in intercultural evenings, storytelling, and creative activities to share their cultures, challenge biases, and build mutual respect. 5. Provide comprehensive sex education. We addressed taboo topics such as consent, healthy relationships, and sexual health. Many participants said they had never had such open discussions before and appreciated the respectful environment. 6. Encourage youth engagement and active citizenship. Participants discussed ways to engage with their communities and take action on social issues that mattered to them. They also explored how to inspire others to do the same. 7. Ensure a long-term impact. The project gave participants knowledge and tools that they could use beyond the youth exchange. They stayed connected through follow-up activities and created a guide that will continue to spread the project’s impact. 8. Promote Erasmus+ and other European opportunities. Participants were introduced to Erasmus+ programs and learned how to benefit from youth exchanges, training courses, and volunteering. They left feeling motivated to join future projects and share these opportunities with others. The project helped participants grow personally and professionally and challenge their perspectives. It also strengthened partner organizations, equipping them with new methods and tools to address sensitive topics and support youth-led initiatives.
