Objectives

The IncludeYOU project was designed to enhance youth participation in democratic and civic life by equipping young people with the competences, opportunities, and resources necessary to engage actively in decision-making processes at local, national, and European levels. The project focused on creating inclusive and sustainable participation mechanisms that ensure all young people, including those with fewer opportunities, can contribute substantively to policies and initiatives affecting their communities and broader society. The initiative sought to cultivate a culture of active citizenship, social responsibility, and democratic engagement among youth while reinforcing participatory principles, equity, and social cohesion. The objectives of IncludeYOU were comprehensive and multidimensional. The project aimed to strengthen the civic competences of young people, encompassing leadership, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication, through innovative non-formal educational approaches. Activities such as simulations, role plays, youth-led projects, debates, and policy labs provided experiential learning opportunities that encouraged reflection, dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving. These interventions fostered young people’s confidence, capacity for initiative, and ability to contribute meaningfully to democratic processes. A central objective of the project was the promotion of structured and constructive dialogue between young people and policymakers. Round tables, consultations, and policy co-creation sessions were employed to create environments in which youth perspectives could be systematically integrated into decision-making processes. These mechanisms enabled young people to influence policy formulation directly while enhancing transparency, accountability, and trust in governance structures. Inclusion and accessibility represented a core focus of the project. The initiative developed strategies to engage young people facing social, economic, cultural, or digital disadvantages, including individuals from minority groups, migrants, refugees, rural areas, and those with disabilities. Participation spaces were designed to be physically, socially, and digitally accessible, ensuring equitable opportunities for engagement and amplifying voices that are frequently underrepresented in democratic processes. IncludeYOU also prioritised the development of replicable models of youth participation. Toolkits, templates, case studies, and practical guidelines were produced to support youth workers, educators, policymakers, and civil society organisations in implementing structured, inclusive, and sustainable participation practices across diverse contexts and governance levels. These resources facilitate the institutionalisation of youth participation and contribute to the long-term sustainability of democratic engagement. The project’s activities were closely aligned with European policy frameworks, particularly the EU Youth Strategy 2019–2027 and the European Youth Goals, with a specific emphasis on Youth Goal 9, Space and Participation for All. The initiative contributed to the European objective of creating youth-friendly societies by fostering empowerment, engagement, and inclusivity in democratic life. IncludeYOU thus represents a strategic and comprehensive approach to youth participation, combining competence development, inclusive practices, and structured dialogue to ensure that young people are recognised as active contributors to governance. The project supports both the development of individual civic capacities and the establishment of systemic mechanisms that embed youth participation as a permanent, legitimate, and influential feature of democratic life, thereby contributing to more resilient, equitable, and forward-looking societies.
