The project "SEX(YOUTH)ALITY" emerged from the need to increasingly expand the area of knowledge and awareness among young European citizens, with a focus on sexual education and the key issues surrounding it. The main topics included the understanding and discussion of a contemporary issue, with particular emphasis on related aspects such as anatomical knowledge, violence, and consent. The youth exchange took place in Madrid from May 26 to 31, 2024, involving 40 young people from 8 European countries (Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden) and 8 group leaders without age limits. The primary aim of the exchange was to contribute to building a more equitable and democratic society, where knowledge about sexual issues would no longer be seen as a taboo, but rather as a valuable topic for discussion, enriching participants and improving their future prospects. For this reason, raising awareness among young people was seen as essential to achieving the project's goals and, consequently, to contributing to a better society. Moreover, the project was fully aligned with the values of the European Union and was intended to serve as a vehicle for promoting them. A fundamental pillar of the project was the creation of spaces where young people could strengthen their sense of belonging to the European Union, while acquiring tools to better understand a topic that, despite its relevance in young people’s daily lives, remains taboo in some European countries. Another objective of the project was to ensure that most of the young participants came from disadvantaged backgrounds and at risk of social exclusion, offering them the opportunity to experience an international exchange and to share reflections and ideas with peers from diverse cultural contexts. All these elements will prove highly valuable for their future development. The main specific objectives achieved through the project were: To promote the dissemination among young people of topics related to greater sexual awareness. To highlight the global importance of the topic, with a focus on the protection of diversity, the prevention of violence, and awareness regarding contraceptives. To create a space for reflection on the topic of consent. To increase the sense of European citizenship among young people. To foster tolerance, mutual understanding, and dialogue among young people from different nationalities. To promote European values among participants. In addition, this project raised awareness of the importance of sexual education and the risks associated with the lack of respect for general principles. Once participants returned to their home countries, they had the opportunity to share the knowledge and experiences gained during the exchange with their peers. The project aimed to create a safe and stimulating environment in which young participants could debate the proposed topics, share personal opinions and experiences, and acquire new insights on the subject, particularly through exposure to local realities and the diverse cultures of the participating countries. We believed it was essential for young people to engage in open and constructive dialogue about respect for others and about healthy and unhealthy relationships in general. The project was fully aligned with the EU Youth Strategy 2019–2027, as it was designed around the goal of "enhancing and promoting the level of key competences and skills of young people, including those with fewer opportunities."
