Intergenerational processes are a topic of increasing relevance in a Europe that is experiencing a significant demographic transition towards an increasingly pronounced aging of the population. This transition represents a challenge, but also a unique opportunity for our Society. The aging population in Europe is believed to be caused mainly by three factors that continue to increase over time: declining fertility rates, increasing life expectancy and migration. It is estimated that in 2050 the proportion of people over 65 years of age will rise to 35.9% of the total population, with an average life expectancy of 82.5 years. The growing proportion of older citizens puts pressure on the health, social security and social services systems, directly impacting the younger generations, who have to assume the growing socio-health expenses (caused by the aging population), face greater precariousness economic and labor and a more complicated access to the real estate market throughout the continent The digital divide is another relevant intergenerational problem that is affecting European citizens. While Society and young people grow up in the “digital age”, many older people feel excluded in an increasingly digitalized world. Each partner entity in the consortium faces specific challenges in their local environment, which they have identified as: - Generational Disconnection: In all partner countries, a growing disconnection between generations has been observed. Young people focus on their academic and professional lives, while older and elderly people often feel marginalized and underutilized in society. - Loneliness and Isolation: In many of the communities represented by these youth entities, older people experience high levels of loneliness and isolation. This can have serious implications for your mental health and well-being. - Lack of Intergenerational Communication: Communication between young people and older people rarely occurs in a meaningful way. Shared conversations and activities are scarce, limiting mutual understanding and the opportunity to learn from each other. - Limited Resources: Youth entities lack the necessary resources to address these problems effectively. Intergenerational youth exchange projects require financing and logistical support to be successful. - Education and Awareness: There is an urgent need to educate young people about the importance of the inclusion of older people in society and vice versa. Negative stereotypes and lack of awareness often hinder intergenerational interaction. - Lack of Experience in Similar Projects: Youth entities lack experience in organizing and managing youth exchange projects with an intergenerational approach. They need guidance and best practices to ensure their project is effective and beneficial for all parties involved. These 6 entities have recognized these needs and have decided to come together to address these common challenges by implementing an intergenerational YE project. The project objectives address the important challenge of bringing generations together with the intention of changing the perception of a problem to a resource and offering modern and innovative methods for knowledge and the promotion of intergenerational dialogue and solidarity. • General objectives: - Promote dialogue and active participation between young people, seniors and the elderly to reduce the generation gap and strengthen community ties. - Contribute to reducing levels of loneliness and isolation among older people and the elderly by providing regular opportunities for socialization and emotional support. - Facilitate a two-way learning process, where young people, seniors and the elderly share knowledge, skills and experiences to enrich their lives and perspectives. • Specific objectives: - Know and analyze intergenerational processes to understand the challenges related to aging and the skills necessary to support the elderly. - Involve young people and the elderly in educational and cultural activities to encourage their active participation in society. - Create an inclusive and understanding environment that is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical abilities. - Identify and document good intergenerational practices that emerged during the project to share them with other organizations and communities. - Strengthen collaboration between organizations, institutions and local communities interested in promoting intergenerational processes.
