The project "Our Natural World" aimed to offer youth workers and young people an opportunity to broaden their understanding of outdoor learning and enhance their ability to implement it. This project was driven by the belief that young people needed more exposure to outdoor-based learning experiences, under the guidance of leaders, to boost their self-confidence and self-esteem. This focus on outdoor learning stemmed from our observation of the need for new youth work methods that aligned with the interests and needs of young people. Additionally, we aimed to: - Build the outdoor learning competencies of our youth and provide them with better opportunities for personal and professional growth. - Base our findings on ongoing activities with young people and discussions within our organizations. - Empower leaders to apply methods and tools of the outdoors in their youth practices to encourage and foster active youth participation through the development of young people’s essential civil skills such as communication, team building, problem-solving, and planning. Outdoor learning encouraged hands-on, experiential learning that led to personal growth. This approach involved techniques such as developing skills, team-building, problem-solving, fostering trust and teamwork, and outdoor excursions. It not only promoted personal growth and social consciousness but also equipped individuals with life skills. Furthermore, outdoor learning played a critical role in boosting self-confidence and self-esteem, which were crucial for the development of young people. When it came to engaging inactive young people and promoting youth involvement, it was noteworthy that outdoor learning exposed young people to the environment in a manner that cultivated appreciation, wonder, and respect. It stimulated environmental awareness, enabled young people to see their place in the world, and nurtured active and engaged community citizens. The objectives of the project "Our Natural World" were: - To enhance the capacity of organizations to incorporate outdoor learning into their youth programs. - To examine the relationship between outdoor learning, developing civic competencies in young people, and promoting active youth participation, with a focus on engaging inactive youth. - To provide a platform for networking, generating ideas for future projects, and sharing best practices on activating inactive youth. - To offer participants a chance to directly experience various outdoor learning methods and techniques. - To involve participants in discussions on outdoor learning and active youth participation. - To inspire participants to play an active role in their communities and share their experiences with other young people, including those with fewer opportunities. - To develop participants' civic competencies, particularly in teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills in intercultural settings. The project "Our Natural World" led to the growth and enhancement of the capacities of the participating organizations by achieving its stated objectives. This project served as a valuable opportunity for future youth workers and educators to gain new competencies, learn effective methods and tools that they could utilize in their work. For young people, including those with fewer opportunities, the project provided a chance to develop civic competencies and transition from being passive to active and engaged participants.
