The exodus of young people to the city is constant, due to the lack of social, cultural, sporting and leisure attractions and, above all, the difficulty in finding a job or starting a business in rural areas. We observe this problem in towns in Aragon, in rural areas of Spain and in many European countries. This process of depopulation, which has worsened in the 21st century in many towns, has been going on for several decades. It is necessary to rethink what the social and economic life of rural areas that are losing population should be like, so that it is attractive for young people to remain there. Public or private institutions, local associations, local and regional public authorities are aware of the challenge that depopulation represents and the importance of investing resources to stop it. In May 2023 we carried out the RUR'ACT project (2022-3-ES02-KA152-YOU-000096595) in the town of Munébrega (Aragon). “RUR’ACT” collected proposals from REDR (Spanish Rural Development Network) and the European Commission to keep young people in the villages, we provided new solutions, within the new thinking for rural development. We wanted to complete other initiatives already underway. From La Zarandilla and the partner associations, we wanted to promote events based on artistic and cultural creativity so that groups of rural youth improve their skills to energize recreational, creative and cultural events, providing them with key tools to empower themselves and be part of the change in their community with their active participation. The meeting was a great success, despite the handicap of the few days of preparation. In internal evaluations, with local authorities and socioeconomic agents of the area, they suggested the possibility of giving them continuity and adding synergies with local producers, consolidating the achievements made, advancing in new creative skills and also completing the development possibilities of the partner entities in their areas of work. One of the clear conclusions of the project from the young participants, the partner entities and the young people and local authorities was to carry out a second project that would allow them to consolidate what they had acquired and move forward by creating synergies and a support network including local producers. Therefore, with this second project we wanted to achieve: - Consolidate the creative expression of the young participants and improve their skills, tools and abilities acquired in the previous meeting, to promote practical, sustainable initiatives (Fair or events of creative and cultural expression) by providing attractive sociocultural and economic activities, which are in demand by the youth of Munébrega and the surrounding areas and which can be used in any rural region of Europe. Including criteria of sustainability, environment, gender equality, inclusion, diversity and digital transformation. - Promote synergies with local producers by adding a market to the fair. - Empowerment of some young participants of Rur'act I. - Promote new creative and artistic expression activities and a circus-theater training for young people (by the Casa de las Burbujas Azules de Caspe). In short, we wanted to bring new things to the social and economic life of these areas, by creating creative, artistic and cultural events in synergy with the local economy so that young people do not leave their villages. The general objectives of the RUR’ACT II meeting were: - To provide young people from rural areas (or those active in rural areas) with skills, new tools and sustainable structures, so that they can develop personal, social and professional events and initiatives in their locality, based on artistic creativity. - To provide rural youth with skills and tools to develop local recreational and cultural events in their villages that promote social transformation and youth participation. - To promote creativity in different forms of artistic expression. - To promote European values, respect for human rights, gender equality and solidarity, to build inclusive and environmentally sustainable societies. - To encourage actions and activities that take into account the balance of the surrounding ecosystem. - To empower and guarantee the autonomy of young people with fewer opportunities. - Generate a dossier of good practices with everything that was done and discussed at the meeting to serve as a guide for young Europeans who want to organize similar events. This dossier will be made available on online platforms free of charge to any association and young European. - Strengthen the role of youth as an active driving force in their community
