The project Carretera de Oportunidades was born to respond to a clear reality in Las Hurdes region: the scarce youth participation in social and political life and the need to raise awareness and highlight the value of functional diversity in rural environments. From its conception, it was planned as something more than a one-off activity; the intention was always to create an experience that would engage young people, motivate them to participate, and leave a lasting mark both on individuals and on the community. Its main objective was to improve youth participation in political, social, and civic life, enabling the young people themselves to propose and design inclusive measures that addressed their own reality and that of their peers with functional diversity, as well as those from groups with “fewer opportunities” and at risk of social exclusion. The aim was for them to be protagonists of the process and, through the experience, to learn how to get involved in democratic processes and work as a team to transform their surroundings. From this main objective, other goals emerged that guided the development of the project: - Promote inclusion and diversity, ensuring the active participation of young people with fewer opportunities, those at risk of social exclusion, and those with functional diversity. - Encourage sustainable mobility and environmental awareness, using the bicycle as both a tool and a symbol of a more respectful way of moving through the territory. - Develop social, digital, and creative skills among young people through the production of materials such as infographics, photographs, and especially through the collective creation of a Good Practices Guide. - Raise awareness of the European Youth Goals, bringing the sense of European citizenship closer to the daily reality of rural areas and encouraging reflection on their active role in Europe. - Foster dialogue with local and regional institutions, facilitating meetings that brought young people closer to political decision-makers and allowed them to express their proposals and concerns. - Strengthen young people’s critical thinking and analytical skills. - Promote mobility in non-formal and informal learning, as well as active participation among young people, and encourage cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity, and innovation in youth policies. Ultimately, the execution of this project sought to provide a real opportunity for personal and collective growth. It was about broadening horizons, connecting young people with their territory and with Europe, and creating lasting impact through the Good Practices Guide, the networks established, and the shared experience, inspiring and facilitating future initiatives in the region and in other rural contexts with similar characteristics.
