The greatest achievement of the Youth Exchange was that young people from the four Nordic countries came together and were empowered to grow into brave, self-accepting adults. The objectives were: Identity strengthening Knowledge of assistive devices and their use Friendships and connecting with others Finding your own community Peer support: No one is alone Learning useful deafblindness skills The Finnish Deafblind Association’s annual events for the deafblind youth have created a well-functioning network for them here. Connecting new participants to the network is easy, meetings are arranged there, and there is active discussion. The network covers the whole Finland and is diverse in its communication; different communication methods are accepted and considered. It will be a great achievement if such culture spreads to all Nordic countries. The access to information, language and interaction skills of deafblind / vision and hearing impaired people varies greatly. Deafblindness is caused by rare diseases, which is why receiving peer support and identifying with the deafblind community may be completely sidelined. In addition, the most common diseases causing deafblindness are hereditary and progressive: the communication and aids of children and young people, and consequently their functional capacity, are constantly changing, and communication and access to information with non-family members can be stressful. For this reason, deafblindness organisations in different countries best reach the target group. Employees are able to edit information into an individually accessible format, but communication is often slow and it takes a long time to get a response. Deafblind / vision and hearing impaired people participate concretely, and only a few have the ability to search for and share information that enables them to work in groups. The expertise and customer group knowledge of the Finnish Deafblind Association makes it possible to build this event into an attractive package that is clear and easy to market in other countries. The decision to participate is easier when everything is already planned. In the event one can be an active member of the group, and their opinion is always asked.
