Towards Action (TA) was a youth mobility project focusing on agency and societal engagement of young people in Finland. The goal was to help young people to gain agency and become more aware of the different possibilities and ways to become active in the democratic society. TA also aimed to help with eco-anxiety, hopelessness and societal exclusion, which all are increasing problems amongst youth. TA focused on four semesterial topics (activism, art, action and utopias), under which the activities were planned and composed. Young people were actively involved in the planning and implementation of the project and its events throughout the project’s lifetime. The need for the project itself was addressed by some young people involved in a previous food activism-themed youth mobility project (FSAA). The activities of TA were organised in collaborations with young people, other organisations, specialists, activist groups or artists. Horizontal structures, dialogue-based learning and different ways to influence or take part in the project were promoted and often discussed with participants, as they were an important part of the implementation. The project created platforms for improving various skills and competences while attending (and initiating) meaningful and impactful activities with likeminded people. Events were organised in four different cities in Finland, which focused on co-learning of different skills and knowledge, building communities and networks, creating dialogues, reflecting on different perspectives and learning about the different possibilities to take action and find agency within the civil society - by learning these skills, the competences to participate, to influence and to become a part of the democratic discussion were improved. The events were camp-like gatherings where participants could join many different activities and build community together or study circles focusing on specific topics. The different activities provided a variety of outputs, such as different new skills, increased awareness of civil society and personal capabilities, possibilities and resilience. Also a better understanding of European values and new networks were built, which led to indirect and direct outcomes, such as finding meaningful activities through new networks, becoming more able to work with different people, being able to initiate new ideas and to apply new practices and gained knowledge into use, becoming active in the project or in some other activism-related initiative and experiencing changes in attitudes and motivation related to democratic involvement. The implementation, practices and methods were designed to promote the objectives of the project. The objectives of TA: 1. Strengthen youth participation in civic activism 2. Increase young people’s knowledge of civic society, environmental activism, urban sustainability, and global justice 3. Promote inclusion and social cohesion 4. Transform eco-anxiety into constructive civic engagement 5. Facilitate dialogue between youth and local decision-makers 6. Create new gateways, connections and networks that promote a long-term active citizenship 7. To create long-term impact TA strengthened youth agency, promoted inclusive participation, addressed eco-anxiety through action-based learning, and new created sustainable networks. The project increased youth participation through open, low-threshold events and volunteer-led planning, which would lead to more active citizens with better capabilities to operate within the society and have influence on it. Regional inclusion was promoted by organising events in different locations around Finland and by actively involving organisations, movements and artists from outside of the Helsinki metropolitan area, into the project. TA aimed to bring young people from different backgrounds and areas together - to share, co-learn and reflect. By this, TA strengthened social cohesion within different groups of young people.
