Objectives

With this project we wanted to realize long-term and sustainable peace training based on non-formal and alternative methods. The aim was to bring together a multicultural group of young people from different Balkan communities as well as from the European Union with different competences but all of them connected to volunteering and to give them skills that would enable them to jointly carry out further activities to deepen the relations between their countries. In order to achieve the goals of peace building, promotion of intercultural communication, tolerance of intercultural coexistence, this project was supposed to be as intercultural, interreligious and multi-ethnic and socially mixed as possible in terms of participants and in terms of trainers/group leaders. The designed framework and programme had the aim to invite young people from different cultures and religions to communicate with each other, to treat each other with respect and to listen to each other in order to prevent unsolvable conflict situations. This non-formal learning frame was thought as a third place where living together and a common Europe could be experimented. The idea was that the richness of intercultural cooperation would be discovered as well as common aspirations. The project aimed to contribute to the emancipation of young people, to make them aware of the importance of their own voice and to strengthen them as active citizens who can and want to help shape society and Europe. That for, it was of importance to encourage them in their human development. This, because firstly, young people who become aware of their capacity to act become aware of their influence in civil society and become all the more engaged in it. Secondly, it can prevent attachments to nationalist, identitarian movements that benefit from insecure, meaning-seeking young people. The emancipation of the participants should also be supported through fostering their skills to orientation in life and as active citizens, skills about how to realize their own initiatives, skills about upcycling to work with a low budget and in a sustainable way. The programme was supposed to invite the participants to try out their own activities, to lead their own workshops, with the daily format of the “open space”. Through the work with esthetical education methods as theatre pedagogy and creative writing the aim was to foster self-reflection among young people in order to contribute to reconciliation and prevent exclusion, adherence to ideologies, discrimination and hatred. The strategy of the so-called "experience of difference", which is possible in writing and playing theatre and in which a distance to one's own role and to another possible role can be experienced at the same time, means experiencing that other ways of living, living together, communicating, looking at the world and its role are possible - other narratives beyond separation or segregation are possible. Objectives where that by stepping into each other's shoes, by discovering different literary voices, by the experiences shared by the different interventions and educators, by visits and by what the participants share with each other, the young persons would learn about each other's context, country and history and perhaps develop a better mutual understanding. After the project, the aim is for the participants to go to schools and youth centers as ambassadors to raise awareness of the issues and goals among other young people. This project aims to stimulate and reinforce reflection and discussion among participants and young people on the importance of youth exchanges as a way of securing peace, and therefore the importance of systematic and long-term youth exchanges such as the Voluntary Service. During the exchange, which also involved volunteers from European Solidarity Corps, European Civic Service and national civic services, all participants reflected on voluntary service as a method for sustainable peace-building and for creating active citizenship in Europe. After such an experience, the aim is, that these young people become a kind of ambassador of this awareness wherever they go.
