Objectives

During the summer of 2023, the Jules Verne Center in Novi Sad, Serbia, the Youth Center 23 in Gouvy, Belgium, and the Youth Center of Vire-Normandie conducted a youth exchange at Kikinda, Serbia, to work together to find solutions to the major environmental and social issues of our time. The central theme of our exchange was primarily ecology. Considering the richness of this first experience, the success of the project, the quality of the work we had together, and the connections that were forged, in a desire of continuity, the sustainability of established partnerships, and a deeper understanding of the complex themes we worked on, we decided together to continue the actions undertaken with our youth groups through a new project. The youth exchange "Towards Tomorrow and Beyond!" saw our three organizations work together for the second consecutive year, bringing together young people aged 15 to 18 from Serbia, Belgium, and France in Vire, a small town in Calvados, Normandy. Through this project, we aimed to continue the reflections, questions, and rethinking of our lifestyles and ways of thinking in order to raise awareness among young people about environmental issues and give them the will to act and position themselves as drivers of change that is becoming increasingly crucial, and undoubtedly vital for the future. One of our objectives was to raise awareness among young people about ecology as a responsibility, both towards themselves and future generations, in order to make them aware of the challenges and benefits of an environmentally friendly lifestyle. This involved the implementation of various workshops, activities, and debate and discussion sessions, which aimed to enable young people to become true eco-citizens, to acquire the tools, knowledge, and skills to question humanity's place on our planet, and to develop new ways of living and thinking that are more respectful of the Earth and all living things. This exchange also provided an opportunity for our organizations, which specialize in informal education, new pedagogies, and socio-cultural activities, particularly for future adults such as adolescents, to reflect on their practices and their relevance to today's world. The ecological transition demanded by the current climate crisis cannot be achieved without a profound social transformation, and young people are a key force behind this transformation. Through the educational values we have developed, we aimed to ensure that young people become not only actors, but also authors of their own learning, by promoting a participatory approach and encouraging autonomy and accountability. This is to develop citizenship and enable individual and collective empowerment through decision-making skills, the development of critical thinking, and the expression and consideration of opinions and choices. We wanted to ensure that everyone can grow and flourish to become a conscious citizen, capable of engaging, getting involved, and having a grip on the world, while being aware of their rights and responsibilities and the strength of the collective.
