Seven Notes, One Future was a dynamic Youth Exchange program that empowered young musicians and vocalists to voice their concerns and aspirations, free from adult influence. The project combated ageism and encouraged youth to leave a lasting impact on European society, culminating in the release of a freely accessible music album on Jamendo under a Creative Commons license. Addressing key challenges such as economic uncertainty, social inequality, and political disengagement, the project also explored ageism, which had been exacerbated by the post-COVID-19 landscape. Many young people face limited employment prospects, prompting migration in search of better opportunities. Additionally, disproportionate government spending on older generations contributed to financial imbalances, transferring debt burdens onto youth. Ageism restricts young people’s access to education, employment, and social inclusion, reinforcing stereotypes that undermined their potential. It also weakens intergenerational relationships, hindering societal progress. The Seven Notes, One Future project fostered collaboration and solidarity, essential for addressing shared challenges like climate change, economic disparity, and social inequality. Our aim was to provide young amateur musicians and singers with a platform to reflect on their future and amplify the voice of their generation without interference from adults. By addressing ageism and encouraging young people to leave their mark on European society, the project empowered them through artistic expression, culminating in the release of a freely available music album on Jamendo under a Creative Commons license. Objectives and Achievements - Promoting Youth Voice and Preventing Ageism The project fostered a safe space where young people could express themselves creatively and discuss generational challenges. Through non-formal education (NFE) and peer learning, participants explored their experiences with adultism and shared their visions for the future. Activities such as music jamming, songwriting workshops, live performances, and studio recording sessions enabled them to articulate their ideas. The initiative was entirely youth-led, with adults facilitating only logistical aspects, ensuring that young voices remained authentic and unfiltered. - Encouraging Intercultural Exchange through Music Bringing together 25 young musicians from Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Czechia, and Romania, the project fostered collaboration among individuals of diverse backgrounds, skill levels, and musical styles. Participants, aged 17 to 30, included high school and university students, young professionals, and unemployed youth from both rural and urban areas. By forming mixed bands and self-organizing, they engaged in daily peer learning, emphasizing the value of exchanging skills, perspectives, and experiences. - Promoting Solidarity, European Values, and Human Rights Participants composed and recorded a 10-song album, using their music to address discrimination, hopes, and dreams for the future. The album was made publicly available and promoted through a live concert (broadcasted on Instagram), a city busking session, and dissemination activities. Surveys revealed that many participants deepened their understanding of European values, democracy, justice, and civil rights, reinforcing the project's impact on civic engagement. - Enhancing Key Competences, Including for Youth with Fewer Opportunities According to reports from five team leaders, participants improved key competences across multiple domains: Personal, social, and learning to learn Citizenship competence Entrepreneurship competence Cultural awareness and expression Multilingual skills Digital competence STEM Literacy Fostering Active Citizenship and Participation Participant reports indicated a stronger commitment to combating discrimination, intolerance, xenophobia, and racism (5 reports). Many also expressed: Increased interest in elections and democratic processes Greater willingness to voice opinions and take action for change Improved ability to cooperate across cultures Promoting Diversity and Inclusion Participants gained a deeper understanding of diversity and became more tolerant toward different values and behaviors. The project actively supported social inclusion by ensuring accessibility for youth facing obstacles and personalizing the experience to their needs. By achieving all its objectives, the Seven Notes, One Future project not only amplified youth voices but also strengthened solidarity, intercultural dialogue, and active citizenship across Europe.
