The project “Health is in the Countryside: Young Ambassadors of Health in Rural Areas” (project reference: 2023-3-HR01-KA154-YOU-000177395) was implemented between 1 March 2024 and 31 August 2025. The project was led by SUMA – Association for Sustainable Development, with partners Mladinska zadruga Panotrip z.b.o. – socialno podjetje (Slovenia), Sustainable Vibes APS (Italy), and KOINONIKI ENSOMATOSI – ASTIKI MI KERDOSKOPIKI ETAIREIA (Social Inclusion) (Greece). The project aimed to stimulate broader public debate and increase the visibility of issues related to the health and well-being of young people in rural areas of the Republic of Croatia. It enabled young people to have their voices recognised in public and by decision-makers, while offering opportunities to acquire additional knowledge and skills essential for a healthy and quality life. The project involved young health ambassadors who formed the backbone of the planning and implementation of all activities, thus ensuring the project’s legitimacy among young people, respecting their views and needs, and strengthening their sense of ownership. Through implementation, a platform was established connecting young people with each other, with decision-makers, and with partners from Italy, Greece, and Slovenia, who contributed examples of good practice in promoting the health and well-being of rural youth in their countries. Main project objectives: 1. To activate young people to become advocates for health and well-being by leading initiatives relevant to their peers and local communities. 2. To involve youth in shaping public policies, highlighting the importance of their participation in addressing challenges that directly affect them. 3. To initiate dialogue at the European Union level to disseminate good practices in the field of youth health and well-being in rural areas. The project contributed to achieving the objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme under KA154 – Youth Participation Activities, by promoting participatory processes, strengthening dialogue between youth and decision-makers, and raising awareness of the challenges faced by rural youth. Through the project, five online training sessions, eight local consultations, three study visits (Italy, Greece, Slovenia), the central Rural Health Youth Event (RHYE) in Đurđevac, and seven local projects were implemented. The project also produced ten articles for SUMA’s website and a set of Public Policy Guidelines on Youth Health and Well-Being in Rural Areas.
