Objectives

The project aimed to improve the quality of young people’s participation in democratic and electoral processes in response to recognised political disengagement, lower levels of political literacy and a lack of trust in institutions. It sought to empower young people for active citizenship and electoral participation, enable direct contact and structured dialogue with political candidates and decision-makers at local, national and European levels, and stimulate discussion on key democratic issues, including the possibility of lowering the voting age to 16. Through four cycles of educational activities and structured dialogues, young participants developed the knowledge and skills needed for informed participation in democratic processes, strengthened their critical thinking and understanding of the political system, and prepared for constructive dialogue with decision-makers. An online campaign, co-created with young people and implemented during the election period, aimed to encourage youth voter turnout while creating space for informed discussion on the role of young people in democratic society. The campaign highlighted voting and different forms of civic engagement, the importance of dialogue with decision-makers, and topics such as lowering the voting age, with the goal of raising awareness, strengthening interest and fostering active youth participation in democratic processes. The project primarily targeted high school students aged 16–19, with a particular focus on final-year students who had the opportunity to vote for the first time in 2024 and 2025. In total, 1,073 young people and 41 decision-makers took part in the project over the course of two years.
