Nowadays, due to the magnified active usage of social media platforms among young people, young people are constantly bombarded with information from various sources, including social media, news outlets, and websites. Media is how we stay entertained, connected and informed, so it has a huge impact on our lives. With subscription services such as Netflix and smartphones rising in popularity, media has never been so easily accessible. The average daily social media usage worldwide is 145 minutes per day. Young people, in particular, tend to spend large amounts of time browsing social media apps each day. This can be incredibly dangerous for young minds. Media can impact an audience’s thoughts, attitudes, and behavior, often playing part in shaping modern culture. Such effects can also reinforce existing beliefs, whether for good or ill. The media we consume shapes our opinions on many different important topics – including politics, healthcare, and current events. The last thing we want is to base such important opinions on lies and misinformation. Platforms such as Instagram and Facebook allow rapid sharing of information, which gives news a chance to spread quickly, often making the fake news seem believable. The project aimed to address the mentioned problems and equipped young people coming from different countries with the skills of media literacy and critical thinking to discern credible information from misinformation, enabling them to make informed decisions and avoid being overwhelmed by information. The young people were involved in the activities that not only helped them become more aware of their media consumption habits but also encouraged them to think critically about the content they encounter, ultimately empowering participants to make more informed choices about the media, the way they respond to and interact with them. With the activities to be carried out during the project, we aimed to contribute to the media literacy of young people and to raise their awareness against misinformation and manipulation in social media. Objectives of the project: - Cultivated media literacy and critical thinking abilities. - Enhanced awareness of media-related issues among youth and local communities. - Strengthened communication skills, particularly participants' ability to engage in discussions. - Fostered the development of intercultural learning skills and attitudes among young people. - Expanded international networking opportunities and communication channels. - Facilitated mutual understanding and appreciation of each other's cultures and traditions. - Equipped participants with the skills to analyse and critique media content and information. - Encouraged networking and collaboration among young individuals across different contexts.
