Objectives

RemoteWell was the second training course organised by The Glore Network and its main aim was to train European and non-European organisations hosting ESC volunteers to manage and overcome geographical and cultural barriers. The specific objectives of the project were: To train members of organisations active in hosting ESC volunteers in Europe and partner countries on: 1- Recruiting candidates; 2- Selecting ESC volunteers; 3- Providing learning support to volunteers and using Youthpass; 4- Disseminating ESC projects through local promotion and web/social media; In addition, the project: 5- Fostered the creation of new partnerships and strengthened existing links within the network; 6- Promoted the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps programmes. The problem that gave rise to the overall aim of the project is geographical and cultural distance, particularly when the actors involved come from cultures that are far apart. The issues related to the specific objectives of the project that were identified during the project design phase and addressed during the activities are as follows: 1- The ESC portal provides a selection process that is not very customisable; 1- Sending support organisations often fail to find suitable candidates, leaving the host/coordinating organisations alone in the recruitment process. 2- Very often, sending support organisations do not know the candidates personally and do not actively participate in the selection process; 2- The staff of the organisations find it difficult to take cultural differences into account during the selection process, particularly during interviews, both because of geographical distance (and therefore the need to conduct interviews via video call, almost always in a language that is not fully mastered) and because of cultural differences; 2- Professional selection and guidance techniques are not widespread among consortium operators, and specific material is not available online (on SALTO, for example). 3- Support for volunteers' learning is rarely a priority for host organisations, which tend to focus on the needs of the users and communities in which they operate. This leads to a lack of resources invested in supporting volunteers' learning; 3- The increase in volunteers' training needs makes it more complex to monitor and support them in their learning process; 3- Youthpass and other tools are not always used appropriately and their full potential is not fully understood. 4- An effective online communication strategy requires constant updating due to the rapid evolution of the sector. Keeping up with new trends on social media is very costly, but also essential, particularly in order to reach younger people; 4- As with learning support, little importance is often given to the dissemination of results, which is why organisations allocate insufficient resources and do not have qualified staff. 5- Building strong partnerships is key to making sure projects are high quality. To really work well with organisations from partner countries, it's really important to get to know each other in person and build strong partnerships, because organisations from Programme countries almost always have to lead the way when it comes to working together, even if ESC volunteers are hosted in partner countries. 6- European opportunities for young people are still too little known outside specific contexts, particularly in more marginal areas such as Belvedere Marittimo. The skills that participants have learned which are relevant for their work with young people are related to managing more effectively: - participation in an international group where English is the common language - promoting a vacancy, improving the quality and/or quantity of applications received - selection and orientation interviews - active listening methodology - Youthpass in the process of supporting volunteers and other certification systems such as GloRe - involving volunteers in the dissemination of their project - disseminating an ESC project both online and locally - analysing the educational value of the experience - sharing what they have learned with the rest of the organisation - analysing the impact of the project on their organisation.
