Objectives

PermaWoodlands is a training course that will bring together 15 youth workers from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, and Bulgaria to address the challenges of climate change and youth social distress with increasing focus and vigor, proposing specific actions and goals to mitigate the effects of the environmental and social crisis in small rural towns and remote areas. The project will take place in Làconi (Italy), a town of 1,700 inhabitants in the province of Oristano. PermaWoodlands stems from two main issues, the climate and environmental crisis and the social crisis in rural, remote, or degraded areas. Through the Miyawaki methodology, by which small areas can be reforested and empty or degraded urban land can be transformed into mini-forests by restoring the biodiversity of places and cities, it aims to involve the community and especially the youth to promote the creation of new green spaces with a dual environmental and socio-cultural purpose. Through non-formal education and reforestation methodology, integrated with the principles of permaculture and nursery self-production (focusing on the planting of native trees), it is intended to provide fundamental skills to youth workers and the organizations involved in the creation of green spaces and places that create social and environmental impact by generating positive change. The Training Course will last ten days and will be developed in two preparatory phases: the first part will be purely theoretical in which participants will share the issues and good practices related to the climate and social crisis in their territories, delve into the key issues of the project, and a second concrete phase during which the youth workers involved will be able to put the skills and methodologies learned into practice in the field, reforesting and regenerating a real green space in the heart of Laconi, made available by the Municipal Administration. The results of the project will be shared on an online platform, in which all the guidelines for the reforestation of green spaces will be included, as well as all those activities or suggestions that may be useful to stimulate involvement in such a project. Specific goals of the project include: - Raising awareness of environmental challenges and their impact on our lives. - To spread awareness of permaculture and Akira Miyawaki's method of reforestation. - To create a best practice for the transformation of uncultivated green spaces into social and green spaces that contribute to the fight against climate change and social degradation. - Deepen understanding of the ecological situation in different European countries and the strategies adopted by governments and society. - Exchange good practices on non-formal methods in ecology and environment. - Prepare a collection of activities as a handbook for youth workers to be placed on an online platform. - Inspire civic activism for environmental protection. - To promote Erasmus+ as a catalyst for environmental education and international cooperation. The goals of the project from the perspective of youth work practice focus on promoting environmental awareness, empowering youth, and promoting sustainable practices. Participants in PermaWoodlands: - They will know, learn, and use Miyawaki, permaculture, and nursery gardening methodologies to help implement a reforestation and cultural regeneration project of brownfield or abandoned areas. - They will acquire additional advocacy and communication skills to promote environmentally friendly policies and practices in their work as youth workers, encouraging and inspiring youth to become advocates for positive policy changes in their regions. - They will develop skills in listening, non-violent communication, and leadership.
